Character Tropes
Character Tropes
*Bad*ss : Ain't he always?
+
*Badass: He's one of the major characters of the series, of course, Whirlwind fits this trope.
**Action Dad : Is this by the Darkness Trigger series. Granted, we don't actually see his kids until Genesis Awakening, but still...
+
**Asskicking Equals Authority: He's one of the most respected and well-renowned GUN soldiers, let alone a member of the very elite Central Guard, in the series because he kicks so much ass, even in his late twenties.
***sskicking Equals Authority : He's a Brigadier General (Major in the Hell Prizm trilogy) and can kick a lot of *ss, even in his 30s. That's some real bad*ssery, right there.
+
**Badass Arm-Fold: He does this from time to time.
**Bad*ss Arm-Fold : One of his many many poses.
+
*Berserk Button: Whirlwind has quite a few of them despite his generally casual and admittedly goofy demeanor. Our prime example - mention [redacted for spoilers] at your own peril.
**Battle Couple : With Glacier, even though they don't fight side-by-side as often nowadays.
+
*Big Eater: Implied. If confirmed to be true, it would be justified as Whirlwind does train and do other physical activities rather often in his free time. Whether or not he uses the same speed-eating technique is up for debate, however.
*Berserk Button: Whirlwind has quite a few of them, even in the Darkness Trigger series. Examples include hurting his "family" (he prefers to use that term for his friends by the time Night of Vengeance rolls around), threatening either Glacier, Zephyr, or Andre, and bringing up his younger brother.
+
**Sweet Tooth: If his list of "likes" in his infobox is any indication, Whirlwind really likes sweets in particular.
**Unstoppable Rage: He's VERY prone to this if you press any of them; moreso in the Wake Against Destiny trilogy.
+
*Big Good: Alongside Sonic and Shadow, Whirlwind occasionally serves as this to some of the other heroes in the Clash of Mythics series.
*Big Good : Considering he's one of GUN's higher-ups in Darkness Trigger, this is kinda expected
+
*Cute Little Fangs: Whirlwind has a pair of these, though they decidedly become less cute whenever he finds himself pissed off
*Blond Guys Are Evil : Downplayed. He is very abrasive and, well, a jerk*ss, but he's ultimately a good guy. Completely averted by Darkness Trigger.
+
*Determinator: For better or worse, Whirlwind admittedly isn't very good at backing down from a fight when his blood really gets pumping.
  +
*Good Is Not Soft: Don't ever let this guy's friendly demeanor fool you. Whirlwind definitely isn't afraid of letting blood be spilled and getting his hands dirty if the going gets rough.
*Character Development: Whirlwind starts off in Dawn of Destruction as snarky, cold, anti-social and fueled solely by revenge. After certain events, his reasons for his vengeance are revealed, leading to a mental breakdown for the poor guy. By that point, Whirlwind accepts his mistakes and opens up further to his allies and forms some pretty deep relationships. Glacier, Sonic, and Shadow are the best examples.

**Defrosting Ice King: This also counts.
+
**Beware the Nice Ones: This also counts.
*Dead All Along : As it turns out, Whirlwind wasn't actually alive as himself for majority of the Wake Against Destiny trilogy, but possessed by Abyss, the source of his tremendous power. When the Wildfire Monarch awakens, Whirlwind is unable to stop it and dies in the process.
+
*Jerk with a Heart of Gold Whirlwind was definitely this during his younger years, being incredibly abrasive and prone to cursing around almost everyone except for Tails for the first half of Rage Against the Empire.
  +
*Papa Wolf: Trust me when I say that you do not want him catching you hurting any of his friends and/or GUN subordinates. Taken Up to Eleven if the party on the receiving end is Lyn or, in more recent years, Liam.
**Back from the Dead : Whirlwind passes a certain trial while in the Ascended Realm, allowing him to return to Mobius and kick Abyss' *ss back to hellhole he belongs.

*Jerk*ss: Whirlwind is full of this in Dawn of Destruction.
+
*Person of Mass Destruction: Can potentially become this if he decides to quit holding back - which you definitely don't want to do.
**Jerk*ss Facade : The main reason he's such an *ss to everyone is because that if he gets too close, he'll no doubt lose them to the Black Myriad sooner or later.
+
*Pretty Boy: Despite nearing his thirties, Whirlwind is consider as such by some of his subordinates, in spite of the scars left on his body from past experiences. If his apparent hobby of cross-dressing is any indication, the man himself seems to be aware of this.
**Jerk with a Heart of Gold : Slowly turns into this throughout the Wake Against Destiny trilogy.
+
*Reasonable Authority Figure: As a GUN official, he always tries to do his best at being a reasonable guy. That's not to say that there haven't been situations where this proved to be difficult.
*Happily Married : Is this with Glacier by Darkness Trigger.
+
*Red Baron/Names To Run Away From Really Fast: His moniker of The White Hurricane can be very fear-inducing to his foes.
*Papa Wolf : Trust me when I say that you should NEVER do anything that may hurt Zephyr (his future daughter), especially if you're around her age. Andre also applies, but to a lesser extent. Also counts as Beserk Button.
+
*Sir Swears-a-Lot : Whirlwind has dropped quite a number of F-Bombs - not necessarily in the same sentence - during his first major chapter in Rage Against the Empire alone. Expect a lot more in later chapters. He has dialed back his swearing a little as an adult, however.
*Person of Mass Destruction : Whether he's the wrathful Crimson Slayer or the heroic White Hurricane, you can expect some serious *sskicking from him. Taken Up to Eleven when he's p*ssed off.
+
*Team Dad: In more serious situations, and in some that are less so, Whirlwind sometimes shows shades of this.
*Reasonable Authority Figure : As a GUN official, he always tries to do his best at being a reasonable guy.
+
*Tranquil Fury: When you see him put this trope into play, that's a clear sign that he's been genuinely pissed off and is likely willing to kill - something he actively makes a point to avoid commiting in other situations - at that point.
  +
**Unstoppable Rage: Meanwhile, he - being a lot younger and less experienced then - opted for this approach more often in Rage Against the Empire.
*Red Baron/Names To Run Away From Really Fast: Despite his development, he certainly earned the moniker of The Crimson Slayer. While his moniker as a soldier in GUN, The White Hurricane, sounds less threatening, it's still fear-inducing to those who oppose him.

*Shipper on Deck : For Blitz and Edge.

Equipment Tropes
+
Power, Skill, and Equipment Tropes
*Power Fist: The Typhoon Breakers.
+
*Bare-Fisted Monk: Given his unarmed melee-oriented skillset, Whirlwind is essentially this.
*Trigger Happy: Averted, as he only whips out his signature handgun, the Crimson Comet, in situations where getting up close and personal is too risky or he's too far from the enemy.
+
**Supernatural Martial Arts: Meanwhile, Whirlwind is able to attune himself to the physical latent energy flowing in him to an incredible extent to further enhance his strikes.
  +
*Confusion Fu: Whirlwind can put a bit of this into play with his Split Second maneuver.
  +
*Hurricane Kick: His Flying Cyclone technique serves as his take on this.
  +
*Kamehame Hadoken: Whirlwind performs one of these as the finishing blow of his Galeforce Onslaught.
  +
*Ki Manipulation: The source of pretty much all of Whirlwind's abilities and techniques.
  +
**Blow You Away: While his power isn't exactly aerokinesis, the nature of Whirlwind's ki when exerted does manifest itself as wind, so this trope sort of counts.
  +
*Le Parkour: His overall atheliticism allows him to run around with style whenever he damn well pleases.
  +
*Megaton Punch : His Storm Rocket technique has him unleash a punch that deals massive damage and knock foes back by a fair distance. Taken Up to Eleven with the Typhoon Crush and especially the Galeforce Blast, the latter of which he almost never uses.
  +
*Power Fist<span style="font-weight:normal;">: Downplayed. The tactical gloves Whirlwind wears don't actively enhance his punches. That said, they were designed with Whirlwind's preference for hand-to-hand combat in mind.</span>
  +
*Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: His signature Whirlwind Rush technique is a good example of this trope.
  +
*Razor Wind: His Zephyr Blade serves as one, being a crescent-shaped ki projectile launched by quickly swinging his arm inward.
  +
*Shoryuken: His Rising Hurricane technique is obviously this.

*Hey, It's That Voice! : Anyone care to explain why Kaidan decided to become a hedgehog who is a Brigadier General in GUN? (Whirlwind is not voiced in the WAD trilogy, as that's a fanfic.)

**On the more negative aspect, as Whirlwind was formerly part of the Darkness Trigger roster, his creator had no choice but to implement some major changes on Whirlwind, since said creator is no longer invovled with the series in question due to a disagreement.

*Named After Somebody Famous : Whirlwind's surname, Mason, is shared with Alex Mason, the protagonist of Call of Duty: Black Ops. (Hey, it's the only CoD game I've played, okay? ...Even then, I played only in multiplayer...)

This page is still unfinished

CrimsonFlame2K, the author of Whirlwind Reyes/Tropes, considers this page to be unfinished. As such, some sections may change.

This page is filled with the Tropes that fit Whirlwind.

Power, Skill, and Equipment Tropes

  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Given his unarmed melee-oriented skillset, Whirlwind is essentially this.
    • Supernatural Martial Arts: Meanwhile, Whirlwind is able to attune himself to the physical latent energy flowing in him to an incredible extent to further enhance his strikes.
