Violetta the Hedgehog

You held me up this whole time, never giving up on me, even when I thought there was nothing I could do about my intermittent anxiety. See, that’s what I admire about you. You never give up, no matter how bad things get. You are the complete opposite to me at times, because you never back down. I haven’t got a grip on life, in fact, it seems to complicated to me. But I understood it. Life is difficult, Sonic, because it’s our biggest challenge yet. You may face Lyric, Eggman, my adoptive mother, Shadow, even me, but life will always prove to be your biggest challenge. So you have to choose how you decide to overcome it. It’s a leap of faith.”

Violetta the Hedgehog is one of the main protagonists of the Sonic Boom series. She is an anthropomorphic hedgehog gifted with super running speed, who fights alongside her friends as the third-in-chief, backup weapon, mechanic, power source, prankster and ‘gadget gal’ of Team Sonic.

Concept and Creation

The concept for Violetta’s creation is that she is shown as someone who’s the combination of all the main protagonists. Her neckerchief is in correlation to Sonic’s neckerchief because it symbolises her love for adventure. The sports tape wrapped excessively around her arms and legs shows that she is equally skilful in using both her arms and legs, however the tape around Sonic’s legs shows his proficiency in speed. Her crop top and short shorts show that she’s less feminine than Amy, but more than Sticks, hence her long hair. The sports tape also symbolises her lack of vanity. Her body structure was meant to show her as a capable character who can perform tasks that others can’t do with ease, and her appearance was meant to be deceiving to others, but hides a fierce personality inside.

Appearance

Violetta is a purple-furred and thin anthropomorphic hedgehog with cyan-green eyes and peach skin covering her muzzle and inner ears. She has a small black nose, triangular ears on top of her head and no back spines. She also has long eyelashes on each side of her eyes. Additionally, she has long purple hair which goes up to her elbows. She originally had a short tail but it was amputated due to serious injury. For attire, Violetta wears a slightly dark green sleeveless crop top and short shorts, which has a hip holster with many gadgets and weapons, including a gun, clipped onto it and a scarf similar to Sonic’s neckerchief tied in a knot around her neck. She also wears white gloves, white sports tape which circles around half her arms and legs, and green and purple sneakers with grey soles. She is never seen without her Communicator.

In addition to her usual clothes, Violetta has a number of additional attires:

•     Before she became a member of Team Sonic, and for stealth missions, she wears a slim-fitting black jumpsuit with a hood, completely black sneakers and had two streaks of black paint beneath each eye.
• As a disguise, she wore a beige explorer’s shirt, a beige jacket tied around her waist, beige short shorts, rose gold circular glasses and matching boots.

• In winter, Violetta wears a shawl-like embroidered purple coat, a dark green scarf wrapped around her neck, green mittens, purplish-grey snow boots and dark purple stockings.

• At posh parties, Violeta wears an elegant purple wrap dress that almost reaches her ankles, short white gloves, a purple dahlia tucked behind one ear and black medium-heeled shoes.

• For underwater missions, Violetta has her own high-tech attire, which includes a purple wetsuit with white stripes on each side and her face icon on the chest, purple flippers resembling her shoes and a transparent purple face mask attached to an oxygen tank on her back.

• For soccer matches, Violetta has a soccer uniform that includes a white and blue t-shirt with a blue chest logo shaped like Sonic’s head, short white socks and blue and white shoes with red laces.

• At gigs, she wears her usual attire, but adds a black jacket along with it, with a microphone headset.

• For adventures going to another dimension, she has a white bodysuit with purple circles round her wrists, going down the sides of her suit, a chest logo shaped like her head, a purple holster belt with a miniature portal generator, a laser gun and other weapons and gadgets she instructed to only use in a dire emergency. It also comes with a microphone headset attached to the side of the head, near the ear, with a purple and white disc. There is a Communicator-like screen on the arm which can communicate individually and run mobile apps. This was created by Violetta with assistance by Tails. She also has a light purple transparent visor, in difference to the others, which scans for heat signatures, traps and has her Artificial Intelligence operative, named SARAH, built into it.

History

Violetta is a descendant of an Ancient who looked exactly like her, the first descendant of that Ancient forming the kingdom later named as Atraxia. Her biological mother ruled the kingdom last until Lyric purged the kingdom, her mother later giving her and her twin sister over to A.R.C.. She served as an assassin, training and becoming the best warrior in the universe, known as the Black Assassin. She found out she had powers when she was six, training them by herself and revealing them to A.R.C. when she was eight, once she managed to control them. She was born with her enhanced physical traits, but she honed her reflexes, despite the fact that she already had lightning fast reflexes. Her powers are connected to the Crystals of Life, being the guardian of two since some of one’s powers was infused into one of her ancestors, and both of them chose her as the guardian, hence her appearance. Her sister gained her mother’s looks, and Violetta gained her oldest ancestor, an Ancient’s, appearance. Due to this, she can understand the Ancient’s dialect without having to learn it, can operate and make machinery without having to do a trial and error, can find a former Ancient’s hideout due to a special connection to it. She previously dated Zac the Hedgehog, her instructor at A.R.C., after he asked her out on a date. She broke up with him before she left to kill Sonic, leaving her sister to date him to spite her.

Personality

Violetta is highly intelligent, free-spirited, strong-minded, independent and confident. She is a born leader, who organises situations which need to be organised, otherwise leaving it be. She is always open and honest, but keeps secrets of her own occasionally. She is overall a person who everyone likes, however she is a very talented, capable and tough cookie. Violetta is proud of her proficiency in gadget and vehicle construction, also with her vast knowledge of chemistry, which allowed her to make gadgets that broke the boundaries of chemistry. For all her confidence and capability, she is very insecure about her past, so she covers up by acting tough. She is occasionally shy in admitting her true feelings.

Violetta is one of the most sensible in the group, though she messes around with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles sometimes. Despite her happy nature, when she gets stressed out she hyperventilates, losing control of herself.

Violetta’s driving force is her anger. She resents her old organisation, in which she believes she was born into. Her sassy attitude and snarky tongue is always on hand when she wants to dish out a comment. In addition to this, Violetta hides an explosive temper that can result in her powers losing control, but only a few people can calm her down. Her friends always come to her for advice due to her understanding them in ways no one else had, meaning everyone trusts her. Violetta never gives up, showing a strong personality and driving force.

Violetta is noted to be extremely loyal, never leaving her friend’s side when they’re in trouble. She cares deeply for her loved ones and will do anything to make sure they’re safe, even risking her own life to save the other. Her determined manner is profound wherever she goes, Sonic noting that, “She is the most determined girl I’ve ever met.”

Violetta has a profound sense of justice and fair play at all times, and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes. This gives her a stubborn streak that shines through at times, but all the same she is also never afraid to admit she is wrong. However, Violetta suffers from a severe case of intermittent anxiety, which is triggered when she loses control of her powers after she is provoked.

Powers and Abilities

Violetta is an extremely powerful fighter, tying with Sonic as Team Sonic’s strongest member, because when pitted against Sonic, both can fight against each other with all their strength and can come to a standstill, even though at first Violetta won due to the amount of gadgets and strength she had stored in a corner.

Violetta is proficient in all forms of fighting, ranging from martial arts to kickboxing. She also has a sword that is connected to her thoughts, as she is able to summon it at will, and when her eyes glow, is able to enhance her powers and make her sword burst into flames. Violetta is capable of running faster than the speed of sound, this being one of her recognisable abilities, which enables her to think and move faster than Mach 1. Even though she already has her super speed, her powers enable her to, when her eyes glow, enhance her abilities and go almost 2 times faster, which makes her one of the fastest creatures in her universe. Despite her super speed, if she was slowed down her mental processes wouldn’t be slowed down, since her reflexes are self-honed. She can effortlessly create a sonic boom, run along the surface of water, walls and ceilings, out-speed lasers, start small fires from friction by running on the ground, and create strong enough gusts when taking off to knock over boulders. Her speed is so great that she can run a trip that would take others thirty hours by car to make in a few seconds.

Violetta also has the capability to manipulate energy, as she is able to focus purple blasts of energy at others using both her sword and her hands. This can put out fires, wipe out anything within a five hundred meter radius if charged up enough, can blast through force fields and provide a power source.

Violetta’s main offensive manoeuvres are her Spin Attacks, where she curls into a concussive ball, and her Spin Kick, where she spins on one foot to kick her opponent in the face, and her Leaning Slam, where she jumps on her opponent’s shoulders and leans forward, flipping her opponent over and slamming them onto the floor, which damages them considerably. Violetta’s fighting relies on maximum full body strength, which she maintains at all times, quick footwork, flexibility and fast reflexes, along with fast-strike tactics and quick manoeuvres.

For missions/villains that require more muscle, Violetta has her Black Assassin armour, which can enhance her already enhance physical traits even more, providing her with more strength, agility, reflexes, etc.

Equipment

Violetta has a Communicator, a watch like device that can run mobile apps, communicate with people who have the same device, shoot tranquilliser darts (she modified it to do that) and track people of a certain DNA (also her modification). This also generates an Enerbeam, which is charged by her powers.

For terrains she cannot run on, specifically ice, she has a setting in her shoes that can turn them into ice skates, allowing her to skate effortlessly over that land.

For other terrains like lava, Sonic gifted her Purple Force 2, which can morph into any vehicle with a switch of a dial, and has every feature possible.

Relationships

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic is Violetta’s best and first real friend, gaining a genuine friendship even when she was undercover. She denied her friendship and attempted to murder Sonic, later confiding in him with her past in A.R.C.. After she spared his life, he appointed her as his second-in-chief, taking charge of the situation when he is gone. They spend a lot of time together, and later Violetta started developing feelings for him, noticing he became jealous whenever she spent time with Shadow or Knuckles, her other best friends, because she had saved Shadow when she was 13, which was two years back. She thinks highly of him, just like how Sonic thinks very highly of Violetta, but both clash when it comes to skills, though Violetta outshines him in smarts, gymnastics and fighting skills, which he refuses to admit. She respects him greatly, acknowledging that both of them are equals, attempting to treat him like a brother when she has feelings for him which she finally acknowledged after a talk with Amy. She flirts lightly with him, showing slight knowledge of his crush on her but also acts confused about it, and brushes off his attempts at flirting with her, even though sometimes the compliments are genuine. Both hedgehogs would do anything to save the other.

Violetta constantly refers to Sonic’s ego when she playfully teases him, though she shows she respects him as a teammate and as someone she can turn to, having a soft spot for him.

Miles “Tails” Prower

Violetta’s perspective of Tails is that he’s a real sweetheart where love is involved, spotting him writing letters to Zooey constantly, however, she sees him as a capable person who shouldn’t be underestimated. She admires him for his intellect, giving advice on his creations and how to modify them so they won’t fail to function. Tails thinks highly of her, and she is prepared to use her powers for a power source so a machine of his would work. She work on strategising with him a lot, drawing up diagrams for quick strategies. Their friendship is strong, as Tails is one of the two who knows about Violetta’s intermittent anxiety, making a measure-o-meter which detects when her energy is spiking.

Tails immediately regarded Violetta as part of the team, even though his doubts shone through at times.

Amy Rose

Amy is one of Violetta’s closest friends. She helped her understand different feelings, and later on finds out about her intermittent anxiety, arranging meet-ups for therapy. She is jealous of her and Sonic’s close relationship and tried to pry them apart at first, then realised that Violetta doesn’t deserve the scorn and tried her best to make her feel welcome. The two share a bond as sisters, Violetta not being very close to her actual sister at first. They share a passion for painting and dance, both annoyed about Sonic’s ego. They are impressed with each other’s weapon wielding skills, and regard each other as equals, though Violetta can mop the floor with her in a fight.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles and Violetta treat each other like family, Violetta taking him under her wing at times. They both like to go if around, and play practical jokes on others, especially Sonic due to his reactions. Knuckles is everything Violetta is not (Knuckles handles the brute force while Violetta handles the agility and smarts), making Amy describe them ‘as if they were made for each other’, making Sonic highly jealous. Knuckles helps her when she fights and she is making vehicles/gadgets, and both go on patrols occasionally.

They both respect each other, though Knuckles thought he was superior to Violetta until she put him in his place.

Sticks the Badger

Violetta is very friendly with Sticks. They go on trips when Violetta’s free, and she helped her build her alien defence system. They both have slight paranoia, but Violetta started overcoming it and they finally started getting along much better. Sticks hints at times about her and Sonic’s crush on each other, but she denies it firmly, sometimes nervously. She is very loyal to Sticks, not afraid to admit that she’s right, unlike Sonic, who claims he ‘has to see a doctor’.

Violetta regards Sticks as a valuable teammate, including her ideas a lot, crazy or not.

Crimson the Hedgehog

First, they didn’t get along at all, being arch rivals. Violetta constantly outshined Crimson, sparking a burning hatred between the two siblings. After Violetta failed to complete her mission, Crimson was sent to complete it, though she turned sides yet again by persuasion from Sonic. Violetta, after Crimson showed an attitude similar to Shadow, she realised the problem and had a talk with her, which cleared her head. After that, the two became much closer, and in Amy’s words, ‘joined at the hip’. Crimson began to show her own unique personality, though she had the same sass as her twin (though Violetta is older by a minute) sister.

They repeatedly complete each other’s sentences, and are both connected by the Crystals of Life, Crimson and Shadow being the guardians of the Crystal of Love and Violetta being the guardian of the Crystals of Power and Truth.

Iris the Hedgehog

Iris is Violetta’s arch-nemesis and adoptive mother. She took in both Violetta and Crimson when they were left at A.R.C., having no other place to go. She forced Crimson and Violetta to become emotionless assassins, even though Violetta resisted at first. She sent her on a mission, as her commanding officer, to kill Sonic, then when she failed, sent Crimson to finish the job, in addition to terminating the rest of Team Sonic with her boyfriend (also Violetta’s ex) Zac. Violetta detests her deeply, though doesn’t underestimate her, as Sonic does, knowing how powerful she is. Knowing her like no one else does, Violetta went and attempted to stop her herself, resulting in almost getting a serious injury, making Iris tease Violetta about how her friends were her weakness, and how she should’ve finished her job and remained the Black Assassin. Violetta refused to join her, finishing her once and for all.
