Hello, everyone. Today, I am going to give my observations on my all-time favorite fictional villain: Everyone's favorite robot doppelganger, Metal Sonic.

First, a bit of history, for those of you who might not know who he is. Though, this being the Sonic News Network, that's not likely to be a problem... I'll say it all anyway.

Metal Sonic is a character introduced to the Sonic the Hedgehog universe in 1993 by way of a classic Sega CD video game called Sonic CD. This game is considered by many to be the best Sonic the Hedgehog game ever made, with others give that crown to other titles made in that same era of Sonic the Hedgehog history, namely Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (& Knuckles), Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and for some, even the very first Sonic the Hedgehog.

Metal Sonic is, as one might guess, a robot copy of the eponymous hero, created by the series' main antagonist, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik. Metal Sonic was created to be better than Sonic in every way, and was a complete success, to wit, Metal Sonic has superior speed to Sonic, has more tricks than a con man, and is more durable than the speedy hedgehog. His early drawbacks were that when exceeding his top speed using the V. Maximum Overdrive Attack, his insides would overheat, and he would be unable to surpass Sonic's speed for some time, and he often had trouble stopping, as when he lost to Sonic on Stardust Speedway, he crashed straight into a wall, and was defeated for his first time.

Later appearances gave him a sort of personality, and Metal Sonic became a lunatic with an inferiority complex, seeking to ultimately destroy his template, who had bested him in every encounter thus far. In this quest, it is revealed that Metal Sonic has the ability to copy the abilities of his enemies, no matter what they may be. It is known that he has copied the data of the Chaos monster from Sonic Adventure, having captured Big the Cat's frog friend, who had previously had a portion of Chaos inside it. He has also copied the powers and abilities of Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog, and many others.

Today, Metal Sonic is a recurring threat to the Blue Blur, appearing in just about every other game. He has appeared in two new main-series games in a row, as of now: His earlier Sonic CD-esque incarnation in Sonic Generations, and the more modern version which can be assumed to have been transformed from his early self in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2.

Now, for why he's possibly the most overpowered robot in existence.

Quite simply, it's that copy ability he has, and with it, his ability to transform into Metal Overlord by absorbing ships and other robots, first sighted in Sonic Heroes. According to ScrewAttack's Death Battle: Eggman vs. Wily (which is admittedly a non-canon source, but it was put together based on canon research), Metal Sonic can single-handedly eliminate an entire army of robots simply by copying a few powers. If whatever restraint he ever had is eliminated (which was represented in that battle through infection of "Roboenza", a virus introduced in Mega Man 10), he can easily destroy not only his enemies, but also his own team and possibly the world.

This is due, in large part, to his copy ability, with most of his own "natural" abilities playing relatively minor roles in his success.

This copy ability can easily elevate him to godlike power, should he manage to copy abilities of established titans such as Marvel's Galactus, his Heralds, or even a nigh-unstoppable force such as The Incredible Hulk, someone such as Dragon Ball's Goku, or the DC Universe's Superman. With an endless supply of powers and abilities at his disposal, he could reach a deadlock with any number of creatures or even other robots of similar power and ability.

Keep in mind, this is only in theory. Also, regardless of what Metal Sonic is truly capable of, in the end, he is only a videogame villain, and we all know what they are (usually) designed for: Giving the player something to beat up.

So, what do you think of these observations? Do you agree? Why/why not? Let me know in the responses!
