  • Take a look at the list of categories on our wiki and you'll see what I mean.

I'm thinking of a couple different options to help clean up a bit, but I want to get some user input on it.

I would personally like to limit user categories to one per person in order to prevent spamming the category namespace. It makes things a lot neater.

My favorite idea would be to do something like these:

Notice the special characters. That would sort the user categories to the very beginning of the list, keeping them out of the rest of the results! Could really use any type of special character, but I personally like the At Symbol or Dollar Sign.

It's easy to rename categories now, so nobody would have to do anything, I can just rename them for you. I just think it would make things a lot neater and help with reducing a lot of the clutter.

    What do you guys think?

    • Hm.

As I said on the Discord, I have three categories under my name, Pages, Characters, and Fanfics. And while I'm not personally opposed to what you're suggesting, I do really like having the organization that the subcategories allow me, even if it is minimal considering how few pages I actually have.

    • I guess that is a valid point. I think it'd be less of an issue if we filtered them with some kind of leading character. But right now it takes up a lot of the category space when you're trying to sift through them all.

    • I don't really care where my categories go as long as 1) you tell me where they're going and 2) I get to keep them. However, I do want to keep all of my categories because I actively look in my categories to keep track of my articles, and I will, say, look in Category:Wikikinetic's Characters to find all of my characters, or look in Category:Wikikinetic's Redirects to find all of my redirects. So, if possible, I'd like to keep all of my categories. Like I said, though, adding an extra character before my category names would be fine by me if it would be more convenient for you. (I vote for the @ sign, as I think that it looks more intuitive and less obtrusive than the $ sign.)

    • The fact that there exist categories with only one to two pages is a bigger issue I believe.

    • I don't really see the point of removing them from the middle of the list.

I just feel like it's ugly when you're searching through our categories and you see all these ones that have nothing to do with the articles themselves. Most other content wikis don't have these.

    • I think category cleanup is a great idea! There are also a bunch of pages with categories that don't fit them, so renaming categories could help with that too. Also, I think we should get rid of repeated categories i.e. Males and Male are both for a male character, and It's confusing to have to decide whether they should go in one category or both.

I've actually already merged Category:Male into Category:Males, but take a look at this thread if you have other examples. I can use any help I can get.
