  • Just think about it. No other game besides Sonic Mania has been announced after Project Sonic 2017 a.k.a. Sonic Forces. Will it be the finale off the Sonic game franchise or will Sonic's legacy live on? .

      Loading editor
    • It's Sega's biggest franchise that's still getting up off it's feet after 06. No, Forces won't be the end by a long shot.

        Loading editor
    • If the franchise still sells, they will continue making games. It's just how it works.

        Loading editor
    • I vote NEUTRAL on this.
        Loading editor
    • I actually read something about this in TV Tropes and, given how dire the situation looks in Forces, it's very much possible that it could be the very last adventure of the crew we know and love that might end with what basically amounts to a Cosmic Retcon, where any future games from then on take place within an altered timeline.

That said, I hope this isn't the case.

Sonic hasn't really focuses on it's lore recently anyway...

        Loading editor
    • And what's that supposed to mean?

        Loading editor
    • That even if there was a cosmic retcon, it wouldn't really change anything in the current games.

        Loading editor
    • Turns out that I was wrong.

I don't know weather to be happy or disappointed

        Loading editor
    • In such cases, taking a third option in the form of both is a safe option.

Since I'm here, though, it's been an entire year since Forces came out and, though I have first played it only last June, it is quite possibly the biggest disappointment the Sonic franchise has given us by far - at least, as far as I'm concerned. I mean, so much hype, only for it to ultimately fall flat on its face.... shame.

        Loading editor
    • Hmmm...

I think it's safe to say that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate single handedly saved Sonic.

        Loading editor
    • I mean, it's not like Sonic's had the most solid of canons, anyways.

        Loading editor
    • I sincerely wish it did.

    • Sonic has never been able to keep a consistent canon, even before 06. From character's ages and personalities to locations and objects. You almost never see the same city or zone referenced more than once unless it's a deliberate throwback stage like what Generations or Mania did, or if it's Green Hill zone. And I swear Tails' age was retconned to 8 back in Sonic Heroes but I don't remember where I read that he was older before then.

And when was the last time we ever saw the Master Emerald? I think the last game it was ever relevant was Sonic Advance 3. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Speaking of emeralds, the Chaos Emeralds pre Adventure 1 have NEVER been consistent. For Sonic 1-3 it was like each island had their own set of emeralds, and in 3 they introduced the Super Emeralds and then never brought that up again. Knuckles' personality has gone through so many phases before landing on dumb muscle, and even then they don't always stick with it.

Honestly Sonic Canon is one of the messiest things you could ever try to keep up with. It's like opening up a jigsaw puzzle with only half the pieces from three different sets. As for whether or not the franchise will continue from here on out, I'd say yes, but it may be a while before we see another mainstream game released. Maybe they'll bring something to the table at E3 this year?

        Loading editor
    • Master Emerald did show up in a couple games after Advance 3, but it's all spin-offs like Rivals or Runners.

Adding onto the chaos emerald inconsistency, in the first game there wasn't even seven emeralds, there were six. In one game, Sonic the Fighters iirc, there was eight. And I'm pretty sure the first few games disagreed on everything about the emeralds down to the shapes.

Anyway unless there's a full-fledged reboot like the Genesis Wave in the comics, Sonic Canon will probably stay forever, a complete and utter mess.

    • Ohey, Phantom. Long time no see. inb4 first of all, fuck you

In any case, as much as I adore the Sonic series, I will have to agree that the canon really isn't all that tight-knit. I know it's a series targeted primarily towards young children, but that doesn't excuse them from such an issue.

Literally the only direct callback to a previous entry I've seen in the series was when Dr. Eggman alluded to his predicament after the events of Colors, during which he came across the Time Eater, shortly before the final boss of Generations.

Again, I sincerely wish that the series had a much more consistent continuity.

    • One of the Advance games was a sequel to the plot of Battle, IIRC. And Battle had Chaos 0 show up. For some reason.

        Loading editor
    • That'd be Sonic Advance 3. Chaos 0 was an unlockable iirc, and not related to the main plot of Battle.

    • Ah yeah, I forgot about that for some reason. :/

    • SEGA just wont let Sonic die. What about Jet Set Radio, or NiGHTS, or Ristar, or Streets of Rage. Do we just only remember Sonic. Hell, i even remember Alex Kidd.

        Loading editor
    • Oh, I've heard about those other franchises (also, Streets of Rage 4 is in the works, iirc), don't get me wrong. I haven't played a JSR or NiGHTS game, however. Meanwhile, I would kill to see a new Ristar game.

inb4 where's my Rhythm Thief sequel already?!

      also inb4 there's still Yakuza

    • It seems SEGA has shown serious disconnect to their own fans. They care nothing more than Sonic this and Sonic that. SEGA has intentionally ignored their own, non-Sonic games, they had been blatantly ignoring their own fans for their own self-gratification. Other, popular Sega games including Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Sega GT, OutRun, among others, are left completely ignored due to total, complete selfishness from Sega. It's saddening.

        Loading editor
    • you say that but shenmu 3 is coming out this august iirc, and streets of rage 4 is in the works.

      and there's still yakuza

    • just waiting for the alex kidd reboot-

    • I just hope that if it takes THIS LONG for a Streets of Rage 4, It BETTER BE GOOD.

Seriously though. Nintendo knows how to use Sonic and they do it right.

        Loading editor
    • @Smash: Shenmue 3 isn't being made by Sega though. Yu Suzuki parted ways from Sega because Sega themselves have become obviously disconnected from their fanbase because they've gotten increasingly obsessed in trying to make good Sonic games, when really, they're just burying themselves even deeper.

        Loading editor
    • Perhaps not, but that only accounts for one out of the three games I mentioned.

If Sega were as obsessed as you claim, we'd have heard something about what their future plans for Sonic are by now. If they considered Sonic as their only selling point, they wouldn't make us wait 13-14 months without announcing a new game--ESPECIALLY seeing how much Forces bombed. They'd likely go out of business. Sure we got Sonic Mania Plus in between, but that's just an update to a previous release. That'll only get them so far.

    • I think that if SEGA does do more Sonic games, that they should reboot the series and try to stick to a much more consistent timeline. Otherwise I'm going to have to use my usual loophole explainer... altered timelines.

    • I think we could use a new Adventure style game done similarly to Mania, made by experienced fans and actually good writers, and with only a few returning stages from Adventures 1 and 2.

It's be a nice change of pace, imo.

I'm kinda worried about what direction they'd take a reboot at this point. I'm not even worried about the inconsistent timeline with the quality of their recent Sonic content, save for Mania.

I second this, but then again I'm pretty sure this is what most fans have been asking for years.

    • All SEGA should do is listen to their fans to see and give them what they want. But, because SEGA continues to show disconnect to their own fans by not listening to them, I'm getting the feeling they won't last long throughout this year if they keep refusing to give fans what they really want just by ignoring them.

    • Please look at Sonic Utopia.

Admire the world of that game, and then check out Sonic Paradise.

Look at these games, and how excellently they port Sonic's 2d gameplay to 3d!

Sega had the right idea when they made Green Hill Zone in SA2, but they lost the plot with heroes and lost it harder when BOOST, something that works great with the terrible stop-start-stop-start bottomless-pits instakill 2d Dimps design, became the band-aid they slapped over their lack of Sonic understanding.

I'm starting to think the only "Amazing 3d Sonic game" we'll ever see in our lifetimes will be a fangame or a Sonic-inspired Spiritual Successor.

        Loading editor
    • I mean like, they did mention at this year's Sonic Pannel that a new game is being created so...

THERE'S STILL THE SONIC THE HEDGEHOG MOVIE
