Here is the parent and related thread, if you have not read this please read it as it may answer any questions you have. If you still have questions, please ask on that thread, thank you!

The previous thread had the community discuss new proposals to our current Art/Image Policy.

Art-thievery is undoubtedly a problem in the Sonic fandom. People generally recolor to compensate for their budding artistic skill, but this unhealthy practice should be discouraged entirely. A good description of a character is better than a bad drawing. We should not promote art-thieves.

The discussed proposals are as follows:

    • The slight alteration and the recoloring of official artwork are forbidden.
      • Should you have doubts on whether or not you may upload the picture to this site, please contact the wiki's administration team beforehand.
    • Uploading commissioned artwork is allowed with the requirement of crediting the artist.
    • Uploading artwork of other people's characters is allowed if, and only if, concrete evidence featuring the permission of the character's original owner is shown to administrators.
    • Blank bases are allowed. For example, bases merely including general poses and expressions are okay to use. Tracing over the original character's prominent features (Shadow's spikes, Sonic's shoes), however, is forbidden
    • In regards to sprites, non-transformative alteration of official Sega sprites is forbidden.
      • Should you have doubts on whether or not you can upload the picture, contact the wiki's administration team beforehand.

If you agree with the implementation of this proposal, post "{{Voting/Yes}}"

If you do not agree with the implementation of this proposal, post "{{Voting/No}}"

I'm strongly for creativity and I strongly disagree with the practice of art theft and or recoloring. Therefore I vote yes on this topic.

This is setting the precident that you're pretty much screwed if you

      1) can't draw,

      2) can't find someone to draw you a picture,

      3) can't afford to comission anyone for a picture.

Same reason as Realm, some people may really want a character. I don't think people should literally steal art from another Sonic Fan Artist, though I think they should be some exceptions and limitations.

You can make a good character without ever needing a picture of it. "Better a good description than a bad picture."

If that was the case, then a bad picture is a non-issue except in the eyes of the shallow who immediately think "bad picture = bad character". But I will not flood this voting board with a discussion on this, so if anyone wants to discuss it in any detail, feel free to post on my message wall.

I believe you misunderstood the proposal.

If you cannot draw, that is no excuse for stealing artwork. Bottom-line is that if you must illustrate your character (which you don't) even if you cannot draw, you should create something that is your own, not resort to stealing artwork.

If anything, blank bases are there to serve that purpose and help artists grow. You are not screwed; you are just unable to take the easy, lazy, and illegal way out.

...I honestly find this hard to follow. I mean, so what if you can't draw, can't find somebody to commission, or can't afford it? I can't do art at all, my skill's in writing, and there are times when I can't buy art from people. But that doesn't stop me from writing my characters and stories. Like Monk said, a good description is better than a bad picture. This policy's only to ensure art theft and such gets officially outlawed around here, so I'm not sure why you brought up those points to give reasoning for your vote.

I'm going to have to agree with Mantis on this one, Realm. A good description is better than a bad picture, indeed.

While that is true and thieving is bad, I believe that people do think "bad pic= bad character", and your right, whoever thinks like that is strange to an extent and that person who said that also doesn't know how to draw and is desperate for a picture then yeah, he/she is very lazy. But, they're people like that, even though they should never resort to art thieving to an extent in my opinion. Art thieving from say, users here or other website users whether that's be DeviantArt,ArtStation etc is bad, of course and they should get permission. Though, if you mean, "art thieving" from official SEGA Sonic Images, then I think you should allow them (and yes I know this has been resolved long ago, the topic of recolours). I won't discuss why I think this, as this isn't a discussion page but I've just given my short thesis on the subject.

Okay then, I'm neutral. I don't really think that copying others is that bad, since I've done some tracing first, then I finally started to make my own drawings without tracing.

There is no reason to have all these recolors on here. There's just way too many on this wikia. Otherwise, improve your writing skills and describe these people vividly.

Same. That's what I do, I trace it from a SEGA Sonic Character and then I add some changes without it, I don't really post them on this wiki though as my drawing skills aren't great.
