Splice the hedgehog title screen current by frost1992-d7blbs8-1-

Splice The Hedgehog is the name of the fangame starring the titular fancharacter: "Splice The Hedgehog". The game is currently in production. Both users 'Smash The Echidna' and Kapus are working on it at the same time. Many other people have contributed to the project, which made this game possible. The game's engine is the RPGMaker 2003, which runs very similar to the older Final Fantasy games. The game also features a synthesis system, a character interactive party switcher, Jumping and Ring collecting, many familiar zones, skit scenes identical to that of the Tales Of series, and even Special Stages to collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds as a side quest.

The game, Splice The Hedgehog, is the last episode (Episode 54) of the second season in Smash and Co.'s Roleplay Series, being the season finale.

    Story

Splice is an orphan living alone in an old house. He has been living in Greenflower City for as long as he can remember.
One morning, Splice wakes up a few moments too early to the sound of his phone ringing. Upon answering it he recieves an ominous message. "Agent Nero! Abort Mission, return to base immediately!" Splice was left confused and unsettled. After looking up the phone number, he traces the call back to a shady orphanage. While investigating, the city is attacked by the notorious Dr. Robotnik. As usual, Sonic comes to the rescue and chases him away. Splice decides to join him to fight Robotnik, as he is plotting to conquer the world with another brilliant scheme, and even rebuilt his long lost creation: The Egg Carrier. All the while, Splice tries to take whatever chances he can get to investigate his own situation further, and eventually finds out that his long lost father is somehow connected to it, making the mystery even deeper and even more dangerous than he anticipated.

    Currently I'm working on...

    Completing Splice himself.

Still, that's highly impressive, Smash. If you ever plan on making another fanon game, let me know. I'd like to see if I could somehow contribute.

I have no idea about my future game plans though, so who knows.

    • Well, if you do, let me know. I'd like to see if I could help somehow, and who knows, maybe some of my characters could get a part? Once again, very impressive work.

Perhaps the next game you could create could be modeled after one of the RPs here, like Genetix, or something.

Have you guys seen my older video of my battle with him? He's definitely beatable, but it's a long and hard battle. Back then, it took me 3 videos to win. But that was years ago. I updated it now so it's actually longer.

    • Yes I did open it to outside characters in the early production days. I'm not accepting anymore though, since I'm full enough as it is. Only two guest characters are playable, and they are Cymbeline and Daz. Daz also helped with a lot of the music early on, while Cymbeline is kind of important to the series in general.

    • Oi!

I know it's been months since I've made any updates, but I want to ask you guys something. You see, it's about Smash. I'd gone and pretty much finished his character, battle-wise. However, he still uses Knuckles' voice clips. The reasoning behind that is because I had originally planned to voice him myself. Why didn't I? My mic's quality is very poor. In comparison to all the other high quality voice clips used in the game, my voice would clash far too much. So I never changed it.

Since it doesn't look like I'll be getting a high quality mic anytime soon, I'm thinking of changing his voice away from Knuckles. (Despite how much his deep voice fits his character.) There is another character voice I can use instead. The closest fitting one aside from myself, (in my opinion at least,) would be Yuri Lowell's voice from Tales of Vesperia. I just want your input on this, since Yuri's known to be one of the most popular characters in the franchise. Having his voice on my main character feels a bit...how to put it...boastful? Arrogant? Something among those lines. So what do you think? Mind you, this is only a placeholder (for God knows how long) until I can record his clips myself.

That's only half of what I wanted to ask. I noticed a few people had some problems with Smash not having his outfit in the game. My reasoning behind this was to make things feel more classic Sonic style; Males generally don't wear clothes. My characters just do so to feel more casual. Of course, now that pretty much every other male character in the game has an outfit, Smash does seem like the odd one out. His main outfit was going to be an unlockable costume. Do you guys think that he should instead start off with it like every other clothed character?

Not sure what Yuri's voice sounds like. I'll look it up later. As for Smash's clothing, I don't think anyone is going to care. I guess if all your other characters will be wearing clothes, Smash should too, but if Sonic and the other official characters aren't going to wear clothes (are they?) then he'll fit in either way. I believe you mentioned that he was going to be unlocked rather late in the game, and that should be taken into account as well. You know, the only reason why I gave Phys a set of clothes was so that he could fit in with the other fanon characters here, but in my continuity he doesn't wear the outfit.

    • This is a good example of what Yuri's voice sounds like. (He's the guy with the long, dark purple hair. The blonde guy is actually where Kyle's voice comes from.)

As for the clothing, the main reason I brought it up is because some people did care. At least, one person did. That's why I'm bringing it up to see what everyone else thinks. And no, none of the canon characters will wear clothes. (Too much trouble for something they're not known for.)

I'm doing homework again. Haha. I'll have to take a look later (I did say I was going to do it later anyway :P). Are you sure you don't want my help with voice acting? I'll have to get permission to do so, but I can physically do it.

    • It's fine, really. Like I said, it's only a placeholder until I can voice him myself. I already have all of Yuri's voice clips anyway, (for something unrelated,) so I wouldn't want to trouble you with something that isn't going to last. If I need a fresh new voice for someone else though, I'll let you know.

Haha. Somehow, I don't think Smash will want British accents in a game based off a series where all the characters are American. :P

Well there is a plus side to using Yuri's voice: I can actually have him say "Rending Charge", the name of one of his skills.

I'm not even trying to hide Dragon Swarm though. Originally it started out as an experiment, a test of my spriting abilities. And it turned out I was able to successfully custom edit both Smash and Splice their own versions of Dragon Swarm. Since it's such a cool arte, I didn't want to let it go to waste. =P

I'll listen to the voice clip you linked earlier to see if Yuri would be a good choice (for the time being). As for wether or not to have Smash wear his outfit at the start of the game, it can go either way without subtracting any quality from the game. The only thing about choosing to have him wear the outfit in the beginning is that it can't be unlocked later on(and personally, I find unlocking things fun).

EDIT: Okay, I listened to the voice clip. It seems like a great fit, but the only thing is the voice sounds slightly..... younger (I guess is the word I'm looking for?) than I would have thought Smash's voice to be. But that's only my opinion.

        Loading editor
    • Well, while it's true that it wouldn't be unlockable if he starts with it, that doesn't mean I can't find an alternative to replace it. Smash has the most outfits out of all my characters; it shouldn't be hard to find something else.

As for his 'young' sounding voice, Yuri Lowell is 21 years old. This game conveniently takes place back when Smash was 21, as well. It would be natural for him to sound a bit younger.

(Also Knuckles has a deeper voice, so you might just be used to that if you'd been watching my videos. =X)

    • On another subject, I've been thinking about the World Map. I mentioned before (on another site) that I was going to get rid of it and have you travel around in Adventure Field-esque settings. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to go about it then, but I think I have it figured out now. I'll keep the World Map, but have it only as a map that you pull out of your inventory and look at--like an actual map.

Now, as for the areas, here's how I figure they'll work out. Note: I'm putting this up for my sake as well as sharing info. Wanna remember this for when I actually get to work on these.

      • Cities
As you know, from looking at Greenflower City (Before/After the attack,) Cities are the large, safe areas in the game. They offer shops, inns, save points, and generally have multiple exits that lead to different areas. (GFC has three, four if you count the docks.) Some of the exits lead straight to zones, such as Greenflower Zone. While it's not very common, you might also find a dungeon hidden in the city. (Think GFC Sewers. Though some dungeons are actually mandatory.)
      • Adventure Fields
Adventure Fields are similar to cities in that they are large safe areas with save points and multiple exits. However, they do not have shops, and very rarely have inns of any sort. Instead, they are more like hub worlds to various different areas, Zones, and Dungeons. The only confirmed Adventure Field at the moment is the Mystic Ruins, a place you'll be passing through pretty often.
      • Dungeons
I probably don't need to explain this, but Dungeons are one of three types of dangerous areas you have to explore, the other three being Zones and Fields. These require a lot of exploration and puzzle-solving, and are usually filled with enemies. There'll be a lot of treasures to look out for, so keep an eye out. There'll almost always be a boss battle at the end.
      • Zones
Zones are the another of the three types of dangerous areas you'll find yourself traversing. Unlike Dungeons, Zones are pretty straight forward, mainly requiring you to reach the other side. They'll have minimal puzzle solving and more platforming to deal with. They come in three acts; the third one serves as the boss area, and an exit to the zone after beating said boss. Unlike Dungeons, where you might return to the beginning after beating them, you will always end up in a different area after passing through Zones. When you want to go back, you will have to go through the zone backwards to return to where you were before.
There are a few secrets and treasures in Zones too, so make sure you take a look around.
      • Fields
Fields are essentially every area that do not fall into any of the above categories. These will have some similarities to Zones, with the exception that there is no set path you have to take. A good example is the road between Greenflower City and Station Square. While it's a straight path, you're completely free to stray off the road and into the plains. Or you could turn around and head into the forest, (which is another area in itself.) While Zones only have about two exits, here there are no exits: Just entrances to other areas.
Naturally, the theme that was to be used on the World Map will be used here.

    • As you may already, but probably don't know, my main computer's been down just about all month. I've been able to get some work done on my other computer, (Which actually runs MUCH better than my main one, but just doesn't have all my stuff on it--though we plugged the main computer's harddrive into it later on) but things have still been going slowly. I'm not quite used to working on this other computer, and I can't use it as often as I'd like since I have to share it with 3 other people. My motivation's been off and on, really.

But I digress. I've been trying to get stuff done regardless of my working conditions. Splice himself is my main target for completion right now, and so far he's looking pretty good. I've been kinda avoiding spriting his longer animations though, while I knock out his shorter and easier ones first. Because I'm not gonna lie: Splice has a cool design, but it's a pain in the neck to sprite. That's actually the main reason why I've started working on him so late.

Before my computer went down, I was working fairly quickly and efficiently. In fact I'd hoped to have him finished by new years, and have a teaser/preview video up by the 15th of this month (because it was his birthday). Of course, that never happened. I wasn't even able to get on the computer long enough to update his own page on his b-day. So sad.

But anyway, So far I've managed to knock out just about all the little details on him. I've almost finished all his standard animations in battle: Only a few things remain before I start revamping his skills. I'm probably gonna scrap some of them and replace them with new stuff, as his skill list feels pretty bleh right now. I'm debating over whether or not I should get rid of the last of his spindashing skills, (Fire/Ice/Needle Spin, Flame Dive may or may not count,) after removing the spin attack from Endless Bash and his actual Spindash skill.

        Loading editor
    • I suppose this little tidbit of info is update-worthy. I didn't finish Splice, unfortunately. I did, however, finish making all the Elemental Rings compatible with Smash. What does that mean? It means he's the first person to be able to gain an ability from each and every Elemental Ring in the game.

I may try to make a video of it later.

    • Speedy Hammer Flip
So somewhere along the line I got the idea of Speedy using Hammer Flip from KSS. Turns out it was a great way to portray his variation of the characterized Piko Piko Hammer.

If I hadn't already talked about that, one of the hammer weapons is in fact, the Piko Piko Hammer. Its style alters depending on the character equipping it. This was inspired by the tag-team abilities with Amy Rose in Sonic Advance 3, where anyone paired with her could use a hammer.
I went and designed hammers for (almost) everyone. As Speedy's had fire painted on the side of it, I figured this was a nice way to use it.

    • So, you're basically making this game from scratch?  Jeez, how long will it take to finish it?

        Loading editor
    • I'm using the RPGMaker for it, so I'm not sure "making from scratch" is entirely accurate.

Still, I can't answer that question so long as I keep coming up with new things to add.

    • Got a couple small updates here. One, as you may or may not have already noticed, I've given Smash a new battle stance.

      Smash Battle Stance
      Smash NewStance2R
The previous one was so old, it was the first set of sprites I made for Smash when I redesigned his hair. It was old and gritty and I could do much better nowadays. I tried touching it up a bit over time, but it was still very "eh" to me. I could've remade it entirely, but I figured I might as well go with a newer, less complicated stance.

And two, I updated the save points. I didn't talk about the different types of savepoints before so I might as well now.

      Home Save Point
Home Save Points are blue, and indicate that you are completely safe in the area with the save point. These are usually found in towns.

      Dungeon Save Point
Dungeon Save Points are green, and always appear at the entrance to a dangerous, yet important area to explore. They sometimes appear throughout the dungeon, as well.

      Boss Save Point
Boss Save Points are black and red, and indicate that there will be a difficult battle ahead. It will also completely restore your HP and SP.

      Temporary Save Point
Temporary Save Points are yellow, and they will disappear soon after you progress onward. Backtracking does not count.

      Splice sprite3

The last thing I wanna make known is that all I have left to do before starting production on Splice's "Character Complete" video is finish his victory animation and name one of his new skills. I'm pretty excited, as I've been trying to finish him for a long time now. It won't be long now...

I could be wrong, but you gotta keep in mind that he has to deal with matters in his personal life too. After all, he isn't gonna make any money off this game. So with the limited time he does have, he's gotta work on sprites, animations, boss battles, area maps, buildings, NPCs, item placement, battle mechanics and balancing, difficulty curve... I could go on for a while. But you get the idea. Just save up your money for the next several years and you'll be good. XD

Splice The Hedgehog Soundtrack - Like a Glint of Light!

Part 2 of the new battle themes. This song plays in areas away from the mainland, such as on Angel Island, or other off-shore areas you may visit. While it may not sound like you'll hear it very often, it's worth noting that "Like a Glint of Light!" plays for just about 90% of the final chapter.

Summer's ending and I still haven't gotten a whole lot done. I've added a bunch of new enemies and some new backdrops (& Knuckles) to show off in this music video. I hope to try to pick up the pace with this game soon since I'm starting to gather my bearings after everything that went down over the summer. I'll still be very busy though, so don't expect too much!

    • A long time ago, Frost was once an optional character you could unlock through a side quest, which began by meeting him in the western outskirts of Greenflower City during the invasion.

Frost has long since been removed, but the battle you fought to help him fend off badniks stayed intact. Fighting this battle would simply give you some nice items before. But now...

      Gizmo joins the fight

Yes, in the middle of the battle, Gizmo comes outta nowhere and joins up, not unlike what Splice had been doing for everyone else. Unfortunately, he isn't here to stay, but this battle is important for another sidequest in the making.

It took me way too long to do this. Under normal circumstances I could have finished this entire thing within two days. (One if I started early with high levels of motivation.) I've been extremely distracted since last weekend, which was roughly around the time I started it. (think it was last Friday, even.) Anyway, I'm trying to really get myself back to work. I'm currently doing another run through the story to pick off any bugs I left behind, spruce some things up and generally get me pumped to continue. I've gotten a lot of inspiration but I just need to put it into action.

    • First, allow me to say that this is an amazing game you are making. It truly looks like an real rpg game that you can buy at the stores. Second, if I had to guess, this was made in RPG Maker VX Ace, right? I mean, mostly cause I have seen scripts almost simuliar to what you are doing now. (I apologize though if you are using something different as RPG Maker VX Ace is the only thing I know that can create flowing games. If you are using VX Ace, I highly suggest finding a script to reduce the animation and action lag.) Thridly, I wish you all luck with the creation of the game as I know how hard it is to make one.

        Loading editor
    • Thank you. It means a lot to hear my work is appreciated. If this looks like VX Ace then I must be doing something right. But sadly no, this is made with 2k3. In other words, the very second RPG Maker created. As such it is very primative in comparison, so there's a lot of technical stuff I wouldn't be able to do via scripting, such as reducing lag and whatnot.

        Loading editor
    • You're welcome, Smash. And I am honestly surprised this is made with an earlier version of RPG Maker because of how well put together it is. I do understand though that with how old the maker is that scripting is hard to do. Again, I wish you the best of luck in this project.

    • Alright so, my last update was in November...where to begin?

      Splice Fatal Frost

First of all, here is a new skill for Splice! I'd been adjusting the balance of skills he has in his two fighting styles. Some are replaced with new skills with similar effects when he wields dual daggers. This right here is essentially Ice Breaker with a new animation. The only difference is a slightly higher attack power with a lower success rate.

Anyway, I'm more than likely going to continue experimenting with the animation till I'm fully satisfied. Mainly, I wanna try to shrink the ice block down some more. I swear it looks smaller while editing than it really is.

Speaking of character updates, I'd been working on Violet and Gizmo before I moved on to mapping. I'm changing the way Violet learns skills, and Gizmo is getting some new items and weapons to use in battle. I'm prepping for an updates video, so more information will be revealed then.

And now, let me show you what I've been working on in maps.

Exhibit A: Soft glow effect on torches.
      EzxzKHe-1-
      YmBzmUb-1-

You can see how it illuminates the top of Splice's head when he's close.

There's not much to say about these; it's just an aesthetics thing I developed some time ago.

But here's something more relevant. A new area!

Petalwood Pass, a new dungeon I came up with on a whim while listening to some relaxing music. I had some rather pleasant visions for the area, and I eventually found a pretty nice spot for it in the story without feeling too much like filler. Unfortunately the game hasn't quite reached that point yet, so it'll be a while before I start seriously working on it.

MEANWHILE, I've been seriously working on something else!

Station Square Train Station Outside WIP 5
Station Square Train Station WIP 8
Station Square Train Station WIP 9

I've been progressing the story. Pretty soon, I'll be working on the next major area: The Mystic Ruin. Somewhere in there lies the first dungeon.
But yes, Station Square. Station Square is coming along. I'm most likely going to overhaul the other sections of the city I've made, save for the train station. But that's not going to be my main focus for now.

By the way, there's another area that I gave even more attention to before this, but I'm not going to show it here. I'd rather wait until I show it in the updates video, where you'll get the full effect. (imean, the music is what completes the atmosphere here.)

Anyway, I don't want to make any promises that I can't keep, but I'm going to try to make a demo release soon. My goal is to finish the first dungeon, and the story up to that point. My personal deadline is July 31st. I'm seriously hoping to make this work, because I know a lot of you have been asking to play the game but I've never felt ready to give the game out. All I have to do is make the Mystic Ruins, Tails' workshop, the Mystic Ruins jungle, and then the dungeon. If I have any free time left over, that'll be used for bug testing and cleaning up behind myself.
as if i'd have any free time.

But yes, that's the plan! I hope it works out.

        Loading editor
    • Well a lot's been done, but not quite as much as I'd originally planned. Instead of the demo, I'm going to upload a very large update to youtube on the 31st.

    • Well it's been pretty close to a year since my last update. There are a handful of things to note. Here we go. *takes a deep breath*

Experience Sharing is a thing! Characters that are not in your immediate party can still gain a portion of the experience you get in battle!

Field abilities have been expanded on! Tab, Thunder, Daz and Gizmo's have all been made! In addition, the tutorial has been updated to explain how to use Field Abilities!

You now get a visual and audio cue when you are low on health from taking damage on the field!

Skits are gradually getting updated! Splice has gotten new graphics, and eventually the other characters will follow!

The "Treasure Room" in Splice's House has been expanded on!

Splice's kitchen has been cleaned up!

Greenflower City is being overhauled! The general layout will remain the same but the tileset is being redone; the city is looking better than ever!

Smash's High Tension has limitations! Using too much SP will cause him to revert back to normal! Divine Fist has also been replaced with a new ultimate skill; Shining Blast!

Savepoint Glitch has been fixed! No more saving anywhere anytime!

      And finally

      Title

The first dungeon has reached 65% Completion! Just a little while longer!

Phew. Alright, that's all for tonight. I may come back and elaborate on some of those changes I've mentioned.

As you know, there are a lot of characters in this game. It'd be very difficult to handle them all if only the ones you used leveled up. Therefor, if you've gotten, say Pearl to join your party, and yet you're not using her in battle, she will still gain approximately 50% of the experience Splice, someone you are using, would earn. I was thinking about making an item or a piece of equipment or something that allows a character to gain 100% shared EXP.

      Smash The Echidna wrote:

I don't have the sprites done for them so I'll just explain. Tab uses her slingshot to trigger faraway switches and levers. It doesn't do anything to enemies. Thunder uses his wind to blow things. It puts out torches, starts propellers and pushes back enemies. Daz can shoot lightning orbs on rapid-fire. It charges machines and stuns enemies.

Those are all projectile-based abilities. Mind you, not everyone is going to have stuff like that. Gizmo's ability lies in his goggles!

      Gizmo Ability 1
      Gizmo Ability 2
      Gizmo Ability 3

Putting on his goggles allows him to scan the area, and reveal hidden objects. Sometimes this may effect things that are already visible, too.

A demo, however? Eventually. I can't give any release dates so don't get your hopes up, but I have a fair bit left to do before I can be ready for something like that.

    • Ah, well at least some progress has been made. I may not do much on the wiki, but its great to see that this project hasnt died.

    • Appreciate the support, man. I'll keep this going for as long as I can.

        Loading editor
    • Progress has been slow as of late, but I made some pretty nice updates since last time.

First of all, Eggman's Underground Base is 99% complete. All it really needs is a once-over on the aesthetics, and that's something I can come back to at any time. So I moved onto the Mystic Ruins.

      Mystic Ruins Station 1
      Mystic Ruins Station 2
The Mystic Ruins station took a lot of work but it's about as good as it's going to get for now. I'm still trying to figure out how to go about the rest of the area. Building a tileset is one thing (and is also where I left off at,) but mapping this place out is going to be a bit tricky. In the end it most likely won't be a carbon copy of Sonic Adventure but you should be able to know where to go if you've played it.

Meanwhile, skits are coming along nicely.

      Ice physics

      Ice physics2

Here is a short demonstration of how the ice physics work, and one of Splice's passive abilities is. All things considered it's pretty self-explanatory. It was simple to make, too.

This right here is a side project I've been working on for a while.

Overhauling GFC. While the main area is being refurbished with a massively updated tileset, the rest of the city is going to get a whole new layout entirely. I'm aiming to make the place a bit smaller and easier to navigate; especially considering one of GFC's main criticisms were how large it is. As it stands now it's just a huge area with a bunch of smaller maps next to the main large ones. Each area has a wide variety of quality too, as I kept adding more and more to the city as I went along. I still haven't even added everything I wanted!

Naturally, this also means I'll be completely redoing the whole Attack on GFC sequence; which is good because it's a terribly broken mess patched up with duct tape, and I had some neat ideas that never got a chance to be implemented.

Skits are progressing smoothly! Showing off even more new art by Flame-Eliwood.

After obtaining the Leader Flag, you gain the ability to swap party members. At Splice's house or at inns/hotels, you'll find the Leader Flag to activate it.

While the existence of an interactive party switcher is old news, the Leader Flag itself is fairly new. The blue flag activates such, and you get the chance to talk to your friends. Some have interesting things to say, some give hints or remind you of your current quest. Some have unique dialog depending on who you're playing as!

The red flag however, is found in various different places. They're most commonly beside save points, and the beginnings of zones and dungeons. These open up a menu screen to quickly scroll through each character, with a brief summary of their abilities.

      That's all for today's updates!
