Sonic Revolution is video game created by Sonic Team and published by Sega, The game released worldwide on June 23 2016 on the Wii U, Playstation 4 and Xbox One to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise. The game serves as a reboot to the series, re-establishing various characters, their backstories and the world they live in. The game features the long awaited return of the Sonic Adventure style gameplay and other elements like multiplayer and Chao Gardens.

Plot

The games main plot is spit up into 5 stories, each following Two of the characters with levels split between the two. These characters are Sonic and Tails, Knuckles and Amy, Shadow and Rouge, Silver and Blaze and the last story which does not feature one main character and instead has the characters teaming up for one giant level.

Much like the adventure games, Sonic Revolution is very story and character focused. Featuring a story that spans multiple stories with multiple characters and subplots. The dialogue is lighthearted for the most part with a more serious overall plot in a similar vein to Sonic Unleashed's story.

Gameplay

Single Player

The characters all play largely the same, you travel through a semi-open level to reach the goal at the end. The game is based around high speed platforming using that characters unique abilities. Along the way players collect rings which help them stay alive, if they are hit all are lost and collecting 100 rings grants the player an extra life. Throughout the levels are powerups like the electric shield which draws in rings, other elemental shields like the fire and bubble shield, speed boosts, invincibility as well as rings and extra lives.

At the end of a stage the player is awarded a rank from S to D depending on a total score made up of Time, Score (From defeating enemies and collecting rings) as well as ring count.

Each stage has 5 missions; in order to obtain the second mission, the player must complete the first one, to unlock the third, the second mission must be finished, and so on. In order from first through fifth, the missions are to complete the level, collect 100 rings, find a "lost Chao" using hidden somewhere in the stage, finish within a time limit, and complete a "Hard mode" version of the Action Stage.

In stages you can also find 5 red rings, these will unlock concept art and music tracks, most of which are remixes of classic Sonic songs which can be played on any stage of your choice.

Emblems are also given within the game; there are 300 Emblems in total. In order to gain all 300 Emblems, players must beat every mission within every stage, achieve an S rank in all stages and missions, Complete each story, Completing boss attack for every character, completing all sidequests found in the hub world as well as winning all the chao races and chao karate tournaments. After collecting all 300 Emblems, the player unlocks an extra level for each character that is related to that character and a new costume for each character which can be used in both single and multiplayer.

Basic move commands (Wii U)

The left analogue stick is used to move the character. ZL and ZR are used for camera control. Pressing B will allow the character to jump. All characters can grind on rails, while grinding they can speed up using the Y button. Every character can also go on ziplines, swing on vines and many other similar actions.

Sonic

Sonic Plays like you expect him too, he's the fastest of the characters and can use the homing attack by pressing B after jumping, which can be used on multiple enemies to cross large pits or gaps. He also has access to the spindash with the Y button which allows him to squeeze through tight spots or up certain ramp-like structures.

Upgrades

Light Shoes

  • With this Sonic gains the ability to use the light speed dash which allows him to quickly dash across a trail of rings

Ancient Light

  • This gives Sonic the ability to use the light speed attack which, after charging will allow him to quickly hit multiple enemies in a short amount of time

Bounce Bracelet

  • Allows Sonic to use Bounce Attack. It comes in useful both as an attack and getting to high places.

Tails

Like Sonic, he plays like you expect. He has the ability to fly for a short period of time by pressing a after jumping as well as access to his tails spin from Sonic Adventure which can be held for continuous attacks with the Y button.

Upgrades

Through upgrades Tails can unlock gadgets, he has multiple gadgets which can be changed and are similar in function to the RC Vehicles from Sonic Lost World, these include:

  • A robot that will drop a bomb destroying nearby enemies
  • A robot that will fire missiles at nearby enemies, fires a total of 15 missiles, one per second
  • A robot that will turn tails invisible making him undetectable to enemies for 20 seconds or if the player gets hit
  • A the final is a robot that can pickup nearby powerups and rings and lasts for 30 seconds.

The player can select one of these when entering a level and it can be used a total of 3 times per level by pressing the X button.

Knuckles

Knuckles plays similarly to previous games, he has the ability to glide by pushing B after Jumping as well as climbing up walls in by colliding with them, he can perform a punch combo with Y and in midair he can do the drill claw from Sonic Adventure 2 with Y.

Upgrades

Shovel Claw

  • This gives Knuckles the ability to dig using the X button, this allows him to find hidden items

Fighter Gloves

  • These yellow gloves allow Knuckles to perform the maximum heat knuckles attack which is similar to sonic's light speed attack, by holding Y Knuckles will charge a powerful punch. He will then fly towards the enemy and strike with a punch cloaked in fire, it's visually similar to an attack he was able to do in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

Hammer Gloves

  • These gloves give Knuckles the ability to break through walls and other objects he otherwise couldn't destroy

Amy

Amy plays similarly to how she does in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. She has an extra jump by pressing B after jumping and can execute a 3-hit combo attack using her hammer by pressing the Y button, like Sonic adventure she also has a hammer attack in midair which features her doing a somersault holding her hammer. She can also use her hammer to swing from pole to pole like in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.

Upgrades

Warrior Feather

  • By using X amy will do her hammer spin which attacks enemies all around her like in Sonic Boom. It can also be used in midair.

Hammer Jump

  • By holding B Amy will use her hammer to jump, this will send her higher than her double jump and will allow her to reach higher areas she wouldn't normally be able to reach. However in order to be able to use it Amy needs to be running first.

Mega Hammer

  • She also has an upgrade to her hammer which changes it's appearance and increases in range and attack power. The hammer is larger and has a yellow handle, the previously yellow ends are made silver and it gains yellow stripes down the red centre. It is very reminiscent of the larger hammer she had in Sonic Advance 3.

Shadow

Shadow plays similarly to Sonic. He is tied with him for the fastest character and like him he can homing attack by pressing A after jumping. He can also spindash with the Y button.

Upgrades

Air Shoes

  • With this Shadow gains the ability to use the light speed dash which allows him to quickly dash across a trail of rings

Ancient Light

  • This gives Shadow the ability to use the light speed attack which, after charging will allow him to quickly hit multiple enemies in a short amount of time

Chaos Spear

  • By pressing Y in midair he also has gains the ability to use the chaos spear with is a projectile that can destroy smaller enemies and stun larger ones.

Rouge

Rouge plays like Knuckles, she can glide in midair by pressing and holding B after jumping as well as perform a series of kicks with the Y button which acts similarly to his punch combo. Pressing Y in midair she can also use the screw kick which like in Sonic Adventure 2 is the equivalent to his drill dive.

Upgrades

Pick Nails

  • This gives rouge the ability to dig using the X button, this allows her to find hidden items

Heart Bombs

  • These can be planted on walls to destroy them and reach areas she otherwise cannot. They can also be thrown at enemies whether on the ground or in midair, they can also be charged allowing her to throw multiple bombs at once

Treasure Scope

  • Rouge will put on the treasure scope, this will allow her to see things that can't normally be seen such as item boxes and springs that can take her to otherwise inaccessible areas.

Silver

Silver plays similarly to how he does in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). By pressing and holding B after jumping he can hover until his psychokinesis meter drains. By pressing Y he can use the psychic knife from Sonic Generations, a projectile that will stun enemies which allow him to then pick them up with R and then throw them with A, these can then be thrown at other enemies to then destroy them. Using R he can also pick up enviremonetal objects like rocks which can be launched at enemies as well as other things that can help him advance in the level. Silver will throw the objects he's holding at whatever he's locked onto which is automatic, it is shown by a reticle displayed on the enemy. Using the right analogue stick he can move the objects he is holding, thus changing his target.

Upgrades

Shock Bracelets

  • By pressing and holding X silver will slam his hand to the ground creating a shockwave that will stun anything around him.

Teleport Dash

  • He also has the teleport dash, by double tapping B he will dash forwards, it can also be held and it acts like a faster hover. It can be used to damage enemies too.

Psycho Boost

  • This increases Silver's Psychokinesis meter to double it's original size.

Blaze

Blaze is the second fastest character in the game after Sonic/Shadow and she plays similarly to Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Like in that game she has the ability to double jump by pressing B in midair. Using Y she can also use the Fire Claw which can home in on enemies like Sonic's Homing attack.

Upgrades

Spinning Claw

  • By pressing and holding Y, Blaze spins around in a tornado of fire, this damages enemies all around her.

The music will also be remixed depending on the character with each having their own musical style.

Emerald Ocean

Astral Speedway

Mystic Forest

Aquatic Remnants

Deserted Canyon

Taking place upon rails in a giant canyon, this level is very grind heavy and acts as a throwback to Rail Canyon from Sonic Heroes. The stage is very open thanks to the many alternate pathways rails can take you.

Skyward Temple

A temple in the sky surrounded by ancient ruins, This stage takes place atop angel island and is the home to the master emerald. Throughout the level you go from floating area to floating area, bouncing on clouds, swinging on vines and much more while trying to avoid all the bottomless pit's.

Aurora Castle

This stage essentially takes place in and around a castle covered in snow and ice, this stage has ice physics in some areas which will cause characters to become more slippery and harder to control.

Abandoned Ship

An underwater stage taking place in an abandoned ship, this stage has water and while some are able to swim like Knuckles and Rouge which controls similarly to Sonic Adventure 2, some characters must avoid it entirely or they will sink to the bottom of the water with little time to escape before drowning. As the name suggests this ship is also haunted, some ghosts chase you while hide and pop out at you, stunning you.

Egg Plant

A stage that takes place inside Doctor Eggman's base which also happens to be inside a volcano, there are various lava pits and flames that must be avoided. The stage even includes a rising lava section leading up to Doctor Eggman's headquarters which is also the end of the stage before leading into a boss fight.

Cosmic Rush

Bosses

The game features a variety of boss fights, some are against Doctor Eggman and his machines while some are against G.U.N robots and some even against the other playable characters.

Sonic and Tails' Story

Knuckles and Amy's Story

Shadow and Rouge's Story

Silver and Blaze's Story

Hub Worlds

The game has 3 main hub worlds, the first is a modern-day city which is full of cartoony, unleashed-style humans, this is also used as a base for the stage "Astral Speedway". Landmarks of this area include Tails' house, Vanilla and Cream's house and the Chaotix Detective Agency, these places offer various sidequests.

The second is a forest area, there are less people than the city and the area is very open. This area is used as a base for the stage "Mystic Forest". Here you can find Big's cabin where Big will offer you various sidequests.

The last is a set of ancient ruins, people are scarce aside from a few archaeologists and the area is also very open. It is used as a base for "Aquatic Remnants".

When exploring the hub worlds upgrades can be found and sidequests can be completed which unlock emblems. These sidequests range from things like fetch-quests to time trials, completing these sidequests awards the player with emblems.
