Sonic Guns is the first-ever first-person-shooter to be published by SEGA and made by Sonic Team. Many Sonic fans were delighted with the game following its release because of how different it was from any other game. It has sold approximately 3.8 million copies worldwide and was nominated for "Game of the Year". The idea came from a fan requesting a cross-over between the hack-and-slash capabilities of Sonic And The Black Knight and the shooting capabilites of Shadow The Hedgehog. The game was originally going to be a first-person-shooter but the devolpers thought it would be too much like Call of Duty, so they gave the player the ability to choose between third-person and first-person in the options menu. The game also featured an EA Sports-like soundtrack with songs from artists such as Crush 40, Lifer, Nickelback, Breaking Benjamin, and Deftones. This was the first time that a Sonic game featured non-original music tracks. The soundtrack was nominated for an award for "Best Video Game Sountrack of the Year".

Plot[]

The game begins with the protagonist Sonic The Hedgehog waking up after a long sleep, feeling drowsy and disoriented. He wakes to a fluorescent room and discovers that he is chained to an iron chair upon which he is seated in and has electrical tape over his mouth. After struggling to lossen the cuffs, the antagonist's sidekick Snively walks into the room and pulls off the tape, with Sonic yelling "Let me go you bastard!". Snively simply walks around the room and starts to interrogate Sonic about the mission he was fufilled to carry out while on duty for the Mobius Military Corps (MMC). Sonic threatens him again, but forces himself to give in. Sonic starts off by telling a very sad self-narrated story about how all of the young boys in Mobotropolis and across Angel Island had been taken from their homes in order to fight in a war against the Eggman Empire. As Sonic and many of his friends were forced to leave their families behind and train for a while before serving about 2 years in the Military, he started to emotionally change. He began to feel less of a hero and more of a normal person. The objective of the storyline is for the President's military to infiltrate Eggman's base lead by the antagonist Dr. Robotnik A.K.A Dr. Eggman and defeat him to save the world from tyranny. The first mission in the game starts with a cutscene involving Sonic's friends (Shadow The Hedgehog, Silver The Hedgehog, Tails "Miles" Prower, Knuckles The Echidna) who are making jokes and feeling happy about themselves, while Sonic is in a state of depression. Suddenly, a napalm blast strikes from their left side, causing Sonic to faint and wake up dizzy. As he gets back on his feet with the help of Shadow The Hedgehog, their Sgt. Nate Morgan tells them to "Move out!" and "Take cover!". This is when the gameplay begins. Sonic must take out a few enemies with the use of an SBP90 with Red Dot Sight and FMJ ammuntition. As he does this, the game will show the player how to work the basic controls such as aiming, firing, crouching, and throwing grenades. After killing some of Eggman's robotic soldiers, Sgt. Morgan leads the group to it's next operation across a waterfront and into a few buildings. After completing the mission, a brief cutscene shows Silver falling to the ground in exhaust as Sgt. Morgan says, "Get up. That was your first test."

The next mission starts off with Sonic trudging through the rain and mud. Shadow tells him that he will help him out no matter what it takes, and Sonic thanks him for that. Suddenly out of nowhere, Sonic trips over a destroyed robot. A bit frightened at first, Sonic continues to run past it. The group is lead into a Robotic Soldier Hideout. As they take cover, Sgt. Morgan plans out the mission and tells them to use stealth tactics and silenced weapons and to go for the headshot whenever possible. Sonic uses an Uzi with surpressor to take out a few enemies. Reception[]

After the release of Sonic Guns, the game had gained huge success, critical acclaim, even a bit of a controversy. Many game critics believe it was a very well-made game, including Gamespot who called it "The best Sonic game ever" and stated that, "The amazing graphics, well-made layout, and unbelieveable addictiveness has brought both Sega and Infinity Ward back from the dead and into the spotlight." EuroGamer called it "The best Sonic game since Sonic 2 almost 20 years ago. Any Call of Duty or Halo fan will want to pick this one up." and gave it a 9.5/10 rating. However, some critics found the game to be controversial. Despite the high rating, AllGamer said, "This is not only a soild game, it's also very graphic. With these cute little animals shooting each other into a bloody mess, I'd honestly compare it to Happy Tree Friends". Nevertheless, it was nominated for Game of the Year.
