Sonic Forces Overclocked is a story-based mod for Sonic Forces that takes place after the events of said game. The mod’s central aim is to introduce new fully thought-out levels, taking advantage of new obstacles and mechanics to create fresh and exciting levels. The stages have been entirely overhauled with brand new level designs, taking more cues from other 3D Sonic titles, such as Unleashed and Generations, to provide a much more fleshed-out experience for Forces.

The story of the mod takes place a few months after Dr. Eggman’s defeat at the end of the original game. Neo Metal Sonic and Infinite have harnessed the power of the now "Overclocked" Phantom Ruby, bending reality to their will to forge a new army from the ashes of the Eggman Empire. With the world in peril once again, Sonic and the Resistance must reunite to stop the two villains’ Phantom Army, and put an end to the power that threatens their world.

Plot[]

Sonic Forces Overclocked: Episode Metal[]

A few days after the defeat of the Eggman Empire at the hands of Sonic and the Resistance in Sonic Forces, Dr. Eggman makes a last-ditch effort to regroup his forces, silently deploying Metal Sonic to return to the ruins of his fortress and retrieve the the Phantom Ruby, a tool he intends to use in his efforts to re-establish his empire. Upon making contact with the reality-altering gemstone, Metal Sonic is overwhelmed with its power, transforming into Neo Metal Sonic. Having now been freed from his master's control, Neo Metal sets off on his own to Eggman's old laboratory to perform tests on the Ruby, in an attempt to overclock its power. While there, Neo discovers a unmasked, powerless Infinite being held in stasis, following Eggman's betrayal.

Sonic Forces Overclocked[]

Neo releases him, offering him the proposition of even greater power, and to exact revenge against the mad doctor and Sonic, to which Infinite agrees. Infinite and Neo manage to create and harness the power of two overclocked Phantom Rubies, using their powers in secret to create their new Phantom Army from the ashes of the Eggman Empire. In their efforts to overclock and sustain the Phantom Ruby’s power, Neo reconstructs the Death Egg to house the newly created Phantom Ruby core, the source of the Ruby’s energy, which, when fully charged, will give Neo and Infinite the power to rewrite reality at will; a function that Neo plans to use to make himself the one true Sonic. Such power emanating would be enough to alert the Resistance to these activities, so upon the beginning of the core’s charging sequence, the villains’ plan to use their Phantom Army to bring an all-out war to the Resistance, a front that intends to distract them from finding the Phantom Ruby core.

Two months later, now with the growing power of the Rubies in their possession, Infinite strikes. He first targets Dr. Eggman, which leads them to a battle in Green Hill, where Infinite uses his newfound power to destroy the doctor's Death Egg Robot army, letting an energy surge powerful enough to scorch Green Hills into ash. This is almost immediately detected by Resistance HQ, with Amy calling Sonic to enlist his help to seek out this energy spike. Being nearby in Star-Light Zone, Sonic agrees and heads to Green Hill, only to find it a desolate wasteland. After traversing his destroyed home, Sonic spots Infinite facing down a vulnerable Eggman out in the open. As soon as he arrives, Infinite carries out his revenge, proceeding to banish the doctor into Null Space. Sonic is no match for the Ruby’s newfound power, as Infinite reigns terror upon him. He leaves the hedgehog alive however, and continues to toy with him, after which Sonic is then alerted by Amy that Sunset City is once again under attack. Infinite knows a much worse fate is in store for Sonic, vanishing in a flash, leaving the hedgehog to race off to the city.

Meanwhile at the Chemical Plant, Team Chaotix have just finished clearing up the place of all the Badniks that still resided in the area, securing the shuttle bay for the Resistance’s fleet. In that moment however, the group see what appears to be Infinite descend, who proceeds to tear them down. Before Infinite can deliver a final blow, the Avatar swoops in to save them, returning now as a more seasoned "Soldier." Infinite flies off towards the shuttle bay, and the team give chase, breaking down the new Phantom Badniks that have appeared before them. They are too late however, when they arrive the shuttle bay has gone up in flames, with most of the Resistance ships destroyed, a strategy intended to further prevent the Resistance from getting anywhere near the Phantom Ruby’s core. The group manage to find one remaining craft however, which they use to make their escape back to Resistance HQ. Upon their leave, Infinite watches from a distance, with the Avatar facing him down, noticing something slightly off about Infinite.

At this time, Sonic has just made it to Sunset City, currently under siege by the Phantom Army, with golems attacking all over the city. Knuckles radios in, telling Sonic that while the lower levels of the city are more under control, Resistance HQ is under attack from one of the golems. Sonic arrives on the scene and help the Resistance take down the ghoulish monster. Sonic continues to run about the city smashing any Badniks that come his way, with the Avatar and the Chaotix arriving shortly thereafter. The reunion is cut short when another golem appears out of the ground, sending the group into disarray. Luckily, they are saved by Tails, wearing his roboticization armour he held onto from the Lost Hex. With the area becoming more treacherous, the group return to the Resistance base, meeting up with Amy and Knuckles, who are just as bewildered by the sudden re-appearance of Infinite as they are. Sonic is confused as to how Infinite was both in Green Hill and the Chemical Plant at the same time, but before he can give it any more thought, they receive a radio transmission from a Resistance squad out in Mystic Jungle, reporting a sighting of Infinite.

Sonic and the Avatar team up once again and race off to find Mystic Jungle seemingly experiencing a blizzard, an almost nuclear winter. Sonic and the Avatar save a handful of soldiers from a group of Badniks, who tell them that there are other members still out in the forest. The duo continue to the higher parts of the forest, where they find a massive area of the forest being burned down by a legion of Flame Breaths. They manage to reach the remaining soldiers, but it is revealed that they’re merely illusions conjured by Infinite as a trap to draw Sonic and the Avatar in, with the actual soldiers that came over the transmission being nowhere to be seen. Suddenly, a second Infinite appears, with it seemingly being the one the Chaotix encountered at the Chemical Plant. This doppelgänger reveals himself to be Neo Metal Sonic, having used the power of his Liquid Metal transformation to imitate Infinite and throw off the Resistance. With their intentions clear to destroy the Resistance, Sonic runs head-first into battle, leaving the Avatar behind, resulting in the two being thoroughly beaten by Infinite and Neo. At the tail-end of the fight, Infinite and Neo Metal use their powers to send the Avatar into Null Space too. In the commotion, Sonic breaks free of Neo Metal's clutches and runs off, believing the Avatar has been lost. Infinite stands confused, assuming Neo wanted to finish off Sonic personally, but Neo, knowing that now there would be no chance of the Ruby’s core being compromised, sees it as a non-issue, and rather an opportunity to slowly break down the hero.

However, the Avatar, when thrown into Null Space, is strangely redirected through to another portal, which drops him into the interior of the half-rebuilt Death Egg. The Avatar activates his homing beacon, which Sonic and the Resistance intercept back at their HQ. Upon doing some further deep-space scans, Tails determines that the Death Egg has been storing the Phantom Ruby’s core this entire time, having previously assumed that only the wreckage of the previous Death Egg remained. This prompts the Resistance into action, with the plan to gather their remaining ships for an all-out assault on the Death Egg, giving Sonic the opportunity to board the Death Egg; find the Avatar, then seek out the core. With the fleet approaching, Neo is taken aback, having calculated there being no outcome in which the Resistance would discover the existence of the Phantom Ruby’s core this soon, a fact that continues to drive a wedge between Neo and Infinite. Given the core has not yet reached its maximum power, they are in a vulnerable position, deploying countermeasures against the Resistance Army to give the core more time to fully charge. The Avatar listens in on all of this, and manages to pass on these findings to the Resistance.

With the clock ticking, Sonic and the Avatar reach the core, using Tails’ flash drive to give him full access to hack into the Phantom Ruby core’s systems. Tails tells the duo that he will need some time to shut it down, so Sonic and the Avatar leave to lead Neo and Infinite away from the core. In the midst of this, the Avatar is put off by Sonic’s typical over-confidence in this plan, having almost been thrown into Null Space thanks to his reckless actions. Regardless, the two travel in and out of the Death Egg, with Neo and Infinite giving chase, leading them away. Now all they have to do is stall the villains to give Tails the necessary time to destroy the Phantom Ruby core, thus giving Sonic and the Avatar the opportunity to destroy the Phantom Rubies. In this brief period of downtime, the Avatar is still irritated, which Sonic notices, realizing it as a result of his arrogance when trying to take the two villains on his own, an act that almost doomed the Avatar. Sonic admits he’s at fault, and realizes his attitude and brash decision-making can put him and others in danger, reassuring the Avatar he won’t make the same mistake twice, and tells him that they can take the lead in this fight.

Speak of the devil, Infinite and Neo arrive, with the former bewildered by the Avatar’s unexplained escape from Null Space. Sonic and the Avatar race in to fight Neo and Infinite one more time, being drawn into many mind-bending illusions and constructions in Null Space, with the villains' powers being increased thanks to the continuous charging of the core. Sonic and the Avatar hold out for long enough for Tails to shut down and destroy the core, leaving the two villains vulnerable. Neo and Infinite bicker with each other, hastily using their remaining power to charge into the heroes head-on and destroy them as a last-ditch effort, but that is ultimately no match for Sonic and the Avatar, as they fire back with a move so impressive and in-sync that it destroys both Phantom Rubies, ending its reality-altering effects for good.

As a result, all of the Phantom Army's robots begin to shut down, as all traces of the Phantom Ruby’s effects begin to reverse, including the capture of Dr. Eggman in Null Space. Eggman returns to deliver the message that he was responsible for redirecting the Avatar to the Death Egg, as he was left with the tools to manipulate Null Space from within. This gave the Resistance the knowledge of the Phantom Ruby core and thus the advantage they needed over the villains, leading to their victory. With Eggman revealed to be only a hologram message, he disappears, leaving Sonic and the Resistance to return to their world to begin restoring it.

Back in the now closed-off Null Space, Infinite and Neo are stuck without their Phantom Rubies, totally powerless and with no possible way out. Without the Ruby, Neo transforms back into his regular, non-talkative body, leaving the two to live out the rest of their days in the void.

Gameplay[]

1947

Sonic recreating his pose from ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ seen in Stolen Valley.

Character-Specific Gameplay[]

Sonic[]

Sonic's stages are based around three-dimensional movement like that of Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations, which feature transitions between dynamic 3D perspectives and slower 2.5D side-scrolling sections during a stage. For these stages, Modern Sonic has his standard Spin Jump, Double Jump, Homing Attack, Slide, Quick Step and Stomp maneuvers, along with a reworked Air Boost and Boost that rely on energy from the Boost Gauge (which can be filled by collecting White Wisps and destroying enemies) to work.

1948

The Avatar running with the Chaotix, seen in Freight Frenzy.

Avatar[]

The Avatar’s style is much like Sonic's, except the Avatar utilizes a grappling hook as a means of platforming and attacking opponents. The Avatar also makes use of new unique equipment called Wispons, each one with an offensive function (Basic Attack) and an ability for traversing the stage (Special Action). Depending on the Wispon equipped, Avatars can harness Color Powers in new ways by collecting a corresponding Wisp within each stage; for example, if the Avatar is equipped with the Burst Wispon, they can activate Red Burst abilities with a Red Wisp. Before a stage, the player can choose different Wispons to customize how the Avatar controls, thereby allowing access to different parts of the levels. Like Costumes, players can unlock new Wispons as they progress. New Wispons also come equipped with additional skills that grant the Avatar extra abilities during gameplay. Depending on what animal species the Avatar is, they will gain a unique ability to aid the player in gameplay:

  • Bear: Blows away enemies when performing a Wire Attack.
  • Bird: Enables you to perform a Double Jump.
  • Cat: Hold on to some Rings after taking damage.
  • Dog: Restart with some Rings after a knock out.
  • Hedgehog: Dropped rings will remain longer after taking damage.
  • Rabbit: Extends invincibility duration when hit.
  • Wolf: Draws in Rings and extends collection radius of collectibles excluding Red Star Rings.
1949

Sonic and the Avatar

Tag Team (Sonic & Avatar)[]

The third gameplay featured is a Tag Team mechanic (akin to that in Sonic Heroes) that involves Sonic and the Avatar. In the stages reserved for this mechanic, the player wields both characters and their movesets to navigate through a stage, with the leader switching to Sonic when boosting and the Avatar when using the Wispon. The Tag Team mechanic also introduces a collaboration move between Sonic and the Avatar called the "Double Boost", which is triggered when the player engages in an automatic Real-Time Interaction.

Missions[]

The Missions from Forces return, now with updated rewards. While the original game had up to six rewards for a single Mission, most Missions in Overclocked only give the player one reward each, with some giving the player two rewards.

Interestingly, while there are custom Number Ring and Moon Ring placements in each level, there are no Missions for collecting any Number or Moon Rings.

Trivia[]

  • Sonic Forces Overclocked was originally supposed to have four chapters, but the plot was heavily altered later in development to fit into one short, concise story.
    • In a way, Overclocked still leans into the possibility of future content, as Eggman claims in the Cutscene 10 how he's "already away, hatching a new scheme".
  • Overclocked cannot take place after the IDW Comics chronologically, due to various contradictions:
    • Neo Metal Sonic in the comics was already transformed by Dr. Eggman and was intended to be one of his trump cards in the Eggman War, but was completed after the Resistance had already won. In Overclocked, Metal Sonic has to transform into Neo Metal via the Phantom Ruby.
    • Silver was "not being there for that one [Heroes]", despite being present during The Fight for Angel Island in the IDW comics.
    • Dr. Eggman did not become Mr. Tinker from trauma of his defeat in Sonic Forces.
    • The Neo Metal Sonic saga in the IDW comics also takes place one month after Forces, whereas Forces Overclocked takes place two months afterward.
      • The real-life reason for these inconsistencies is that the IDW Comics were still coming out as Overclocked was being developed.
  • Metal Sonic is called "Hyper Metal Sonic" by Eggman at the end of Stage 0. This is a reference to the OVA Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, in the second part of which Hyper Metal Sonic was the main antagonist.
  • Sonic's reaction to Neo Metal Sonic's reveal is word-for-word the same as his reaction to a similar situation in the IDW Comics.
  • According to an official Q&A Reddit thread, Shadow the Hedgehog was intended to have "a bigger role than he did in Forces" and would "have his bike at one point." In the final release, Shadow is not seen or mentioned at all.
    • This is possibly due to Metal Sonic being modded over Shadow and Episode Metal going over Episode Shadow.
      • Various other scrapped content is revealed by this thread, such as Black Doom having a boss fight, the team considering to replace the Galaga Bee enemies with Black Bulls, and Episode Shadow being an epilogue separate from Episode Metal, rather than a prologue to the main game.
  • Heard in the game’s original dialogue (and reinforced by the aforementioned Q&A), Classic Sonic was mentioned and was supposed to be one of the main characters, but was cut due to reasons unknown… [source video has yet to be found]
  • Big the Cat has a cameo in every level.
  • In one of the cutscenes, Charmy can be seen making the poggers face.
  • Sonic Forces Overclocked was originally designed to be similar to Sonic Mania Plus's Encore Mode, but for Sonic Forces.
  • The Overclocked Team has also stated that the game will probably be dubbed into other languages.
  • In a future update of the game, to celebrate Sonic’s 33rd anniversary, Sonic will be given many of his iconic outfits such as:
    • The Soap/Grind Shoes (from Sonic Adventure 2)
    • Sonic's Riders outfit
    • Chip's Bracelet (from Sonic Unleashed)
    • The Gem Shoes (from Sonic the Hedgehog 2006)
