Different users at Sonic Fanon Wiki have access to different functions of the site. While anyone can do most things on the site, including reading and editing, Staff have a few extra abilities.

Becoming a Staff Member

For those wishing to become a staff member, you can review our policy on elections.

What can staff not do?

Staff members should not use their powers to settle editing disputes; for example, to lock a page on a version he or she prefers in an editing dispute that isn't vandalism. Staff powers should be used to help keep Sonic Fanon Wiki clear of vandalism, spam, and users who make malicious edits (i.e. trolls,) but not for simple disagreements between users acting in good faith. Ideally an admin shouldn't be considered "in charge". The ideal staff member is just someone who is trusted to have a few extra buttons and to use them for the benefit of the Sonic Fanon Wiki community.

Staff Roles

Here are the different ranks of wiki staff, in order of rank:

Bureaucrats

Bureaucrats have the ability to manipulate user rights, as well as block and unblock users, so this right is generally used in addition to the administrator group. They have access to the following special permissions:

  • Grant and Revoke user rights

Administrators

Administrators are trusted users who are generally chosen by the community. They have access to the following special permissions:

  • Block users who are vandalizing the wiki from editing and other actions.
  • Grant and revoke both the Chat Moderator and Discussions Moderator rights.
  • Edit the community's skin and format.
  • Edit white-listed MediaWiki pages.
This role also inherits all special permissions from the following roles:
  • Content Moderators
  • Discussion Moderators

Site Moderators

Site Moderators are similar to Administrators, but have less power. This role is actually a combination of two staff roles, and are usually given together, causing them to appear as a Site Moderator. They have different permissions associated with them.

Content Moderator

  • Editing and moving fully protected pages
  • Deleting and un-deleting pages and files
  • Editing and moving protected files
  • Re-upload files
  • Protecting and unprotecting pages
  • Deleting article comments
This role also inherits all special permissions from the following roles:
  • Vandal Patrol

Discussion Moderator

  • Removing and restoring threads and replies from any user
  • Closing and reopening threads
  • Manage Forum boards, and move threads from one board to another.
  • Deleting blog comments
  • Editing and deleting article comments
This role also inherits all special permissions from the following roles:
  • Chat Moderators

Chat Moderators

Chat Moderators are users who can moderate a community's chat room. They can ban users from chat, which will kick a user out of the chat and prevent them from returning until a chat moderator, discussions moderator, or admin unbans them from the user's contributions page or until the ban expires.

Vandal Patrol

Vandal Patrol are wiki volunteers that are selected by staff. They do not need to be elected by the community. If you are an active member and would like to be a part of the Vandal Patrol, please contact an Administrator or Bureaucrat.

Vandal Patrol actually consists of two separate roles, which should usually be given together:

  • Patroller - Allows for patrolling recent edits via Special:RecentChanges
  • Rollback - Allows for one-click reversion of edits

Wikia/Fandom Staff

Some Wikia/Fandom staff members have full access to all Wikia/Fandom. These users are not Sonic Fanon Wiki staff, and should not be contacted for Sonic Fanon Wiki related issues. They will be shown in Special:Listusers/staff on any wiki. Wikia janitors have limited administrator access to all Wikia/Fandom for cleanup purposes. These users will be shown on Special:Listusers/janitor on any Wikia/Fandom. Please see the Central Wikia/Fandom contact page for details on how to contact Wikia/Fandom staff.

Other Important Roles

There are other roles you may see around the wiki that are also important. Here is a list of them and what they mean.

Legacy Staff

Legacy Staff are staff members that are inactive, but still have their powers. These are members of the staff who may have too many responsibilities in their daily lives to be very active here, or may have other things going on. These members have chosen to keep their powers for hope of returning or occasionally helping out around the wiki.

Master of Adoptions

Master of Adoptions manages the wiki's character adoption system. You can visit the page to learn more.
