Sonic Division is a Twitter roleplay storyline created by the Sonic Discord Team developed mid-March 2017. The story takes place in a slightly alternative canon, with the introduction of a new power source known as Ether, which servers as the main plot device for the story. It features the main cast of characters from the original canon, as well as some fan made characters. Because the events of Sonic '06 never happened, some characters that had died remain alive in this timeline.
Plot[]
The story begins in Soleanna. Archeologist from the Soleanna Royal Army discovered stones beneath the Soleanna desert, rich in an odd, bright and warm energy with similar but slightly weaker properties to Chaos energy. GUN quickly took initiative to guard the discovery sight, and began mining more of these stones. They called this new found energy "Ether", and kept the project top-secret. With years of development, Ether was found to be more effective and energy-efficient than Ring energy. The plasma-like substance from the stones themselves is able to harness immense amounts of light and heat, solidify itself while staying totally malleable and transmit “information” like neurons in a brain. The only hazard of using Ether was that, if two objects with a large quantity of Ether energy collide too quickly, it could burst and destroy each other. The Soleanna Research Team began using Ether for various things, such as the creation of hardlight materials for more durable armor and weapons for soldiers, and the development of a device called an Ether Chip. (Ether Chips allow many Ether-based objects to be carried around in a hammerspace inside of a card.)
Chapter 1 - The Battle for Soleanna[]
Months later, Soleanna's Research Team introduced Ether to the public without GUN's own consent. Arguments began to stir between GUN and SRT, as they feared that the public release of this project would hit the ears of those who would want to use this energy for their own wicked plans, and they were right. Soon after, the evil scientist Dr. Eggman heard of how powerful Ether was, and how much easier it was to obtain, compared to the Chaos Emeralds. He quickly devised his first plans to get his hands on it at all costs.
Upon finding out that Eggman was on his way to Soleanna, Team Heroes & Co. quickly head to the city to stop him. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big and the Chaotix fight against Eggman's army, but struggle to hold him back. This results in Team Heroes' defeat, and the doctor succeeds in taking hold of the Soleanna region after a complete wipe-out of the Soleanna Royal Army.
Chapter 2 - The Resistance []
After heading back to the United Federations, GUN contacts Sonic and his friends immediately concerning their loss. Because they were unable to hold Eggman's forces back, the GUN Commander issues an order for Team Heroes to not get involved in any military-related conflicts until further notice. Sonic has to make the decision to either abide by this order, or break it, as he feels that he needs to be the one to handle Eggman. This creates tension within Team Heroes. Although hesitant at first, Tails and Amy side with Sonic, while Knuckles refuses to get involved, as he has more "important things" to deal with, like keeping the Master Emerald guarded. This stirs up a brief fight between the hedgehog and the echidna, quickly separated by Big, who simply wants peace among the team. Vector also refused to side with Sonic, while the other members remained silent.
Chapter 3 - The Stealth Mission[]
Meanwhile in Soleanna, currently under Dr. Eggman's rule, the doctor forces one of the founders of the Ether Project, the Duke of Soleanna himself, to assist him in the creation of Ether-powered mega-mechs for his upcoming worldwide takeover. Resisting at first, the Duke gave in to Eggman's orders for the sake of keeping his daughter, Princess Elise, safe. Aware of the Duke being held hostage, GUN sends Team Dark and the Stealth team to rescue the Duke and his daughter, in order for the army to move in and dismantle Eggman's forces. Their efforts ultimately fail, and Team Dark is forced to retreat back to GUN's Spagonia HQ, located not too far from Soleanna, where they meet the Chaotix three days later. The Chaotix accidentally tell Shadow about Sonic's plan to GUN's restriction order, and Shadow notifies GUN right away. Espio and Mighty both devise a plan to leave Spagonia to warn Sonic.
Chapter 4 - The Confrontation[]
After being notified by GUN of Sonic's plans, the Commander orders Team Dark to track down the blue hero and his friends, and arrest them. The trio head to Team Heroes HQ in the Mystic Ruins.
Espio and Mighty arrive at the Heroes HQ, where they tell the team that GUN may be hunting for them as they spoke, and make the decision to side with Sonic. Mighty suggests that the team should utilize their "Heroes Order" to send out a emergency call to heroes from all of the world to gather at Heroes HQ, and Tails does exactly that.
Just after sending out the Heroes Order, Team Dark breaks into Heroes HQ to arrest Sonic and friends, and both sides battle it out. Shadow almost defeats his blue rival, but in the nick of time, Team Heroes escape from the HQ using Tails' Sky Patrol ship. Sonic contacts all of the other heroes that accepted the Heroes Order, telling them to meet up at Spagonia instead of the Heroes HQ.
Meanwhile in Soleanna, Eggman finally begins sending out his new mega robots known as the Ether-100 Units, based off of E-101 Mk.II. They make their way to Spagonia, to begin their reign of terror.
Final Chapter - United As One[]
As Spagonia falls victim to Eggman's invasion, Team Heroes, along with new heroes from across Mobius, begin the fight against the Ether-100 Units. Spagonia becomes a total war zone as their battle ensues. The GUN Commander, Team Dark and his troops join the heroes in a desperate effort to push the Ether-101 Units, and after a massive battle, they succeed in winning. The heroes quickly head to the remains of Soleanna's Castle Town to confront Dr. Eggman. As they make their way into Soleanna's underwater research facility, the team splits off into groups in order to find the Duke and the Princess, find Eggman, and shut down the Ether Reactor.
Sonic, Tails, Amy, and some new heroes find Eggman, and face off against him in his newly Ether-powered EGG Dragoon Mk.III. They take him down but barely with ease, but Eggman quickly asks to be spared. He tells the heroes that the Duke has plans to use Ether for something more devastatingly powerful than his own Ether-100 Units.
As Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Espio and the others make their way to the Duke's location, they find only Princess Elise. She tells them that her father had gone to the Ether Reactor, and that she's afraid of what he'd do. The team immediately head to the center of the research facility and meet up with Sonic.
The Duke, convinced that he could fix all the wrong that Ether had caused on Mobius, tries to destroy the Ether Reactor. To his own demise, the energy explodes and engulfs him, fusing into his own body. The energy itself transforms him into a god-like entity, driven by his wish to fix the world. The Duke, now calling himself Ether Deus, escapes the research facility and begins to roam Mobius, unaware that he was destroying and warping the universe around him. Before Sonic and Shadow could use the Chaos Emeralds to turn into their Super forms, Princess Elise tells them that the only way to defeat an Ether-powered being would be to have as much levels of Ether as said being. The two hedgehogs decide that, for the sake of Mobius, they'd sacrifice themselves and use both Ether and Chaos energy to defeat Ether Deus. The two turn into their Super forms, then, with addition Ether energy, becoming Astra Sonic and Astra Shadow.
In the end, Astra Sonic and Astra Shadow use their combined powers to form an energy blast against Ether Deus, and end up draining all of the energy out of the three of them. The flash of light shines across Mobius, releasing Ether dust into the atmosphere. Sonic, Shadow and the Duke, nearly losing their lives, land just outside of the Mazuri region.
Epilogue[]
After the series of events, Eggman was finally arrested and forced to mass-deactivate the Ether-100 Units to be destroyed later on. GUN finds Sonic, Shadow and the Duke, and, despite the blue hedgehog breaking the Commander's orders, is left free. Search and rescue teams head to Spagonia and Soleanna in to find any survivors. The remaining heroes return home. The war is won.
As for the use of Ether, GUN closes the mines leading to the Ether caves in Soleanna's desert, and those with Ether Chips are placed under heavy laws forbidding them to use Ether for destructive purposes.
