Sonic Adventure 3 is a 2022 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Pro, Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It is the third instalment in the Sonic Adventure series and a crossover between the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series and the now-defunct Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by Archie Comics. It features four stories: Team Sonic, which includes Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, and Amy Rose; The Revolution, which includes Shadow the Hedgehog, E-123 Omega, Silver the Hedgehog, and Blaze the Cat; the Freedom Fighters, which includes Princess Sally Acorn, NICOLE the Holo-Lynx, Rotor the Walrus, and Antoine D’Coolette; and the Eggman Empire, which includes Maximus the Destroyer, Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic, and Metal Knuckles. The stories are divided into four gameplay styles: fast-paced platforming for Sonic, Shadow, Sally, and Maximus, multi-directional shooting for Tails, Omega, Rotor, and Eggman, action-exploration for Knuckles, Blaze, NICOLE, and Metal Knuckles, and combat-based fighting for Amy, Silver, Antoine, and Metal Sonic.

In 2018, SEGA started working on a sequel to Sonic Forces with the game's director, Morio Kishimoto. The game was intended to both bring back fan-favourite characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie Comics series and turn Sonic Forces into a trilogy. It was planned for a 2019 release, with the third game planned for a 2021 release, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, but due to arguments about the project, SEGA left it behind and started working on a new project that was intended to be "the project that SEGA took their time on." They decided to skip their 2019 mainline game, instead releasing the spinoff title Team Sonic Racing. For the new game, the goal was to "combine the games and the comics into one big continuity." To write the game, they hired Sonic comic writer Ian Flynn to make it more "comic-like." They also hired Takashi Iizuka, who directed the previous Adventure titles. After the development of the Sega Dreamcast Mini, the developers decided to abandon the boost-to-win gameplay style, which was criticized in Forces, and bring Sonic back to his Dreamcast roots to give the new generation of gamers a more definitive Sonic game. A trailer was announced at Sonic Central 2021 and it had no title, but was announced to be released in 2022. There was also a mysterious message at the end of the trailer, but it was revealed at E3 that the message read “6 2,” revealing that the game would release on June 2, 2022.
For Sonic, Sally, Shadow, and Maximus, a player controls a character through a high-speed adventure-based stage. The Running Stages are more like Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)’s adventure gameplay, rather than the gameplay of every Sonic game since Sonic Unleashed.
For Tails, Omega, Rotor, and Eggman, a player controls their character through a stage where objects and enemies are shot at by a gun that the character carries on their mech. It is much like Gamma's gameplay from Sonic Adventure and Tails and Eggman's gameplay from Sonic Adventure 2.
Treasure Hunting Stages
For Knuckles, Nicole, Omega, and Metal Knuckles, a player must go through an open world and find three objects, hidden through the area. A player is given an Emerald Radar to make it easier to find the objects.
For Amy, Antoine, Blaze, and Metal Sonic, the gameplay is based on using attacks to defeat enemies. For each stage, there are five "waves" of enemies. It is similar to the Mystery Dimension from the 2015 video game, LEGO Dimensions.
A mysterious wave of dimensional energy brings Sonic and his friends to a mysterious other dimension, which is similar to their own. There, they meet the Freedom Fighters, led by Princess Sally Acorn, who say they know our heroes. Sally is at war with a mysterious being called MetaMax, who is a known contact of Dr. Eggman. Then they discover that both worlds are two disassembled halves of a larger world. Now, Sonic must gather a large group of allies to collect the Chaos Emeralds, before both worlds are destroyed. Meanwhile, in Sonic’s home world, Shadow and Silver have been framed for a crime that they didn’t do, so they must run from G.U.N., which is now under Eggman’s control.
The game begins with Sonic running through Emerald Coast, having a last look at his former hometown, Station Square before he departs to his new hometown, a large, bright, futuristic city called Neotropolis. Then he gets on the ferry which is headed for Neotropolis.
This story begins in Neotropolis, two days before Christmas, where we see the citizens going to the Santa Claus Parade. Then, the citizens see a large explosion, coming from across the city. A mysterious portal opens and Dr. Eggman comes out. He explains that he made it with the Warp Topaz. Fortunately, Sonic arrives to take the mystical gem from Eggman. Eggman flies away, so Sonic chases him across a large highway. Eggman sends in a dinosaur-shaped robot which Sonic defeats, only to find that Eggman is gone.
A few hours later, Tails traces the energy from the Warp Topaz to the Egg Carrier, which is in Neotropolis’ airspace. Tails flies there in the Tornado but it explodes, so he flies there with his own two tails. He throws a bomb in the centre of the Egg Carrier and it explodes and the Warp Topaz falls into his hand, but when he flies down to the ground, he finds out that it’s a fake and Eggman has the real one, so Eggman teleports back to his base.
Later that night, Knuckles guards the Master Emerald on Angel Island, but Metal Knuckles arrives on the island and the two fight over the Master Emerald, trying to grab it from each other. Unfortunately, Metal Knuckles gets the Master Emerald and charges the Warp Topaz with its power. The Master Emerald physically breaks from the power combination, but its power successfully combines with the Warp Topaz’s power. Knuckles decides to find the pieces of the Master Emerald and finds some in a nearby desert. When he finds the pieces, they give him a vision of two thousand years in the past, when we see Tikal trying to use the Master Emerald’s power to duplicate the Chaos Emeralds in order to save her tribe, but as she duplicates them, she duplicated the entire universe as well, which leads to the creation of the Warp Topaz. Then the vision stops and Knuckles is back in the desert.
The next morning, Amy enjoys a relaxing tropical vacation, but misses Sonic. Then, many robots arrive in order to capture Amy, who is the leader of the Restoration, whom have stopped Eggman in the past. After Amy finishes off the robots, Sonic, who has had a large crush on Amy for several years, arrives and tries to flirt with Amy, but fails intimately. Amy comes with him anyway to help him and Tails stop Eggman.
Sonic and Amy arrive at Tails’ new workshop, which is under a building, and are very impressed by it. The three fly up to Eggman’s mobile base, the Faceship, and Sonic runs through to confront Eggman. Sonic and Eggman fight until Eggman uses the newly enhanced Warp Topaz mysteriously. Sonic, Tails, and Amy run out of the Faceship, but the Warp Topaz’s powers allow the entire ship to implode.
Back on Angel Island, Knuckles attempts to put the Master Emerald shards back on his shrine, where they belong, but both Knuckles and the shards spontaneously teleport to a dark cave, where Knuckles senses more Master Emerald shards. After he finds the shards, Knuckles goes into another vision, but this time it’s different. He sees Tikal in a green, infinite, empty space. Knuckles asks where he is and Tikal says that she’s inside the Master Emerald, and Knuckles discovers that he is back in time. Then Tikal warns him that the universe has been duplicated and if he doesn’t find both universes’ Master Emerald, as well as both universes’ Chaos Emeralds, everyone and everything in both universes will be destroyed. The vision ends and Knuckles arrives back in the cave.
Sonic wakes up amongst a mysterious chipmunk, who says she knows him. Tails and Amy, whom also don’t recognize her, feel weird, and Tails sees that the Miles Electric is glitched. The gang escape and meet up with Knuckles in Station Square. Knuckles tells them that they have made it to a duplicate of their universe and must find the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald before the prophecized destruction of both universes. Then, Tails notices a mysterious ring on top of the Miles Electric, and then he notices that a mysterious hologram, resembling a lynx comes out. She says that her name is Nicole the Holo-Lynx and she knows where the Chaos Emeralds are. She leads Sonic and Amy toward two of the Chaos Emeralds and comes with Tails because she is in the Miles Electric.
On their way to one of the Chaos Emeralds, Nicole tells Tails that the digital world has been distorted by an individual named MetaMax.
