Sonic is a 2019 2.5D platformer that began Sonic the Hedgehog's story on the Cyclone Technologies series of consoles. This is treated as an alternate universe to the main Sonic canon that began in 1991, much like Sonic Boom. It follows a similar story to Sonic (2019) (Essentially being a handheld version of the game for the Cyclone Tempest) with some zones replaced.

Story[]

Sonic the Hedgehog has lived a carefree life running around South Island. However, things are about the change when the evil Dr. Eggman started capturing the little woodland animals and started putting them into robots. Eggman really pushes the situation when he abducted an anthropomorphic 2 tailed fox. That's when our story begins...

Rainy Valley[]

A lush green valley where it always seems to rain.

Cherry Forest[]

This zone is filled with pink-leaved trees and Japanese-inspired architecture and decoration.

Amber Paradise[]

A cave made entirely of fossilized tree sap. The only place in the world every color of Amber can be found.

Underground Lake[]

Unlike Sonic (2019), this level takes place mostly underwater.

Rail Beach[]

Rail Beach is a mechanized beach that harvests solar energy for use by Dr. Eggman.

Egg Labyrinth[]

A mechanical cave filled with traps and deadly obstacles

Eggman's Base[]

Sonic sees Eggman with the abducted Miles Prower and chases after him through his base

Final Battle[]

Sonic encounters Eggman for the final time in this adventure, unless you collected all 7 emeralds, that is

Space Chase[]

As Super Sonic and Super Tails, the bffs in the making chase after Eggman one final time.

Reviews[]

Game Informer[]

7/10 We felt a handheld release of Sonic (2019) on a handheld console was not a bad idea. However, there were zones removed from the original and replaced. In this day in age, handheld versions of games attempt to stay true to their console counterparts. That being said, the game itself returned to the side-scrolling style, contrasting the 3D gameplay of the Vortex's version of the game. Graphics are about as good as the Vortex version. However, this version had more glitches.

Gamespot[]

6/10 Both the Vortex and Tempest versions of the game are supposed to tell the same story. However, both have different zones. While we are not a fan of this, this is not the reason for our low score. There are several glitches we ran into, one annoying one involving jumping onto a Motobug in a specific spot of Rainy Valley, where you die. SEGA and Cyclone have already patched the bug by the time this review came out. However, glitches like this should not have occured. SEGA had more involvement in this version of the game, so maybe Cyclone should take over completely and just buy the deteriorating franchise.

Metacritic[]

Critics have given the game an 86%. While the 2019 Vortex Sonic title transitioned relatively well to the handheld Tempest, a few annoying glitches resulted in a slightly lower score. However, the game overall is great.

IGN[]

7/10 While the game itself was not bad, the glitches that we ran into have been quite annoying and occasionally game-breaking. Cyclone has announced updates that will fix these bugs, so wait until the bugs are fixed to purchase this title.

Overall Fan Review[]

A wonderful handheld retelling of the Vortex title. The difference in zones bugs some fans, who have been able to overlook them. What fans have not overlooked were a few severe bugs within the game. The overall fan rating is 90%.
