Shadow the Hedgehog 3: U.K. Calling, is an open-world action/adventure video game developed by Sonic Team, Traveller's Tales and Platinum Games, and published by Sega.

The game follows near-identical gameplay features from its predecessor, focusing only on Shadow with a more in-depth police/detective mode and manual dialogue changing. It also follows an identical structure to the open world Sonic Adventure games, with an open world and differing activities, only this time taking place in the United Kingdom.

Plot

Many months have passed since the events of Shadow the Hedgehog 2. On January 20, 2018, Shadow arrives in London under the orders of G.U.N. to assist MI6 while the new commander Tony Rubini heads to his home country of Spagonia. Both are part of an international collaboration by the United Nations to combat various international threats. Eventually, both end up having to regroup with old friends and allies to take down a big foe intent on taking advantage of the United Kingdom's lax surveillance and high technology: Dr. Robotnik.

Setting

As the title suggests, the game takes place in the United Kingdom, specifically Great Britain, containing the nations of England, Scotland and Wales. In addition, many countryside areas, forests, mountains and even farmland cover the rest of the huge map.

Some cities in the game include:

Radio Stations

Radio stations return to the series after being absent from Shadow the Hedgehog 2, along with humorous commercials for parodies of real life products. However, since the Sonic the Hedgehog series is targeted towards a younger audience, the songs will be censored. Strong vulgarities, along with references to illegal drugs and sexual content are censored, although mild curse words like “damn” and “hell” are not. In addition, a DJ hosting each station; with them talking about the music and giving their opinions in the world; along with station introductions, dial numbers and jokes about the listeners return. Finally, particular story events are talked about on the air at certain times; and all the commercials, songs, and song intros are played randomly.

Trivia

  • The game's more light-hearted tone was in response to criticisms of Shadow the Hedgehog 2 being too dark for very young audiences.
  • This is the first open-world Sonic the Hedgehog game to take place outside the United Federation, taking place in the United Kingdom.
    • Due to this setting, this is the first open-world game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series to not have a song by Michael Jackson, Britney Spears or Daryl Hall & John Oates in its soundtrack.
  • The subtitle is a reference to the 1979 song "London Calling" by The Clash, which appears on the in-game radio station Invasion FM.
