Plot Synopsis

After his repeated defeats at the hand of his spiky blue nemesis, Dr. Eggman has put his genius to work to create a system of nanites under the name of "INVERSE" in order to robotize zones quicker and achieve his goal of world domination since they didn't require the usage of robotiziers. However, INVERSE rapidly grew in intelligence and betrayed the doctor and after doing so, covered multiple Mobian citizens in it's nanites turning them into half-organic/half-machine soldiers referred to by GUN as "Metallions". In order to combat the Metallion threat and defeat INVERSE, GUN sends Shadow and Rouge to recruit Sonic and Tails in order to combat this threat before it becomes too big for any of them to handle.

Gameplay

Gameplay for STH: CR utilizes the multiple stories of the Adventure games allowing for multiple different character gameplay styles. The gameplay differs between characters with each of them having their own different objectives to finish a stage. Sonic's gameplay is the modern boost formula that was seen in Sonic Unleashed involving speeding and platforming through 3D and 2D and utilizing Wisp power-ups along with the way. This gameplay style allows for you to also perform tricks much like Lost World and charge up your homing attack's strength. Tails' gameplay style is more based on the classic gameplay with dominantly 2D areas that utilize Tails' flying abilities. A new mechanic for his gameplay allows Tails to upgrade his dummy ring bombs by collecting red rings throughout stages with Bosses being more complex in design in order to accommodate with the bomb system. Tails is required to eliminate Bosses in order to beat stages rather than getting to the goal and fighting a Boss separately. Shadow's gameplay style is dominantly 3D and utilizes a more combat-based system to go with a formula similar to the Werehog where you are required to maneuver around stages and fight hordes of enemies head-on with combat techniques. Shadow has multiple chaos powers that require the use of a chaos energy gauge to pull off and the gauge can be filled by attacking enemies with homing attacks and close-quarters combat. Bosses are fought similarly to how they are fought in Sonic's gameplay style (Shadow The Hedgehog-style) however a mechanic in the fights require Shadow to use his chaos powers to perform a "Fatal Hit" on the Boss to finish them off which can only be done with a full gauge. Knuckles and Rouge both retain their treasure hunter gameplay from Sonic Adventure 2 / Sonic Adventure 2: Battle with the added addition being Rouge's stealth gameplay during specific stages in order to obtain the object of interest with the penalty of getting spotted resulting in losing a life. The last gameplay style, which is Dr. Eggman's, focuses on a combination of Knuckles/Rouge's treasure hunter gameplay and Shadow's close-quarters gameplay as Eggman rides around in a multi-purpose Eggmobile. The gameplay requires Eggman to complete a specified number of tasks in order to finish the stage with his gameplay having a more 3D Open World style. Eggman's stages range from defeating a number of enemies to securing a base or capturing a certain individual.
