It is part of the successful Capcom vs. series and is intended for release in spring 2015 for the Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Story

Millions of years ago, the world of Habunda was created by a being known as The Creator. He built this world using a divine hammer, which may grant its user the unimaginable power of creation and destruction. In the present day, the forces of evil have stolen the core of the Creator so to use it to find the location of the divine hammer. With his core detached, the Creator transformed into the Abyss, a huge, dark cloud that slowly degrades Habunda in search of his core. Sensing the destruction of their world, the heroes take action to retreive the stolen core of the Creator to prevent the evil forces from getting the divine hammer and the world from crumbling.

The story of the game is anthologic and consists of 8 short stories, each of which features a different number of characters, stages and bosses and have a different sub-plot. Because the 8 stories are interconnected, by played in the correct order, the series of the events are unravelled and the player may conclude what the story of the game is. That is, all 8 stories together comprise the aforementioned plot of the game. Once all 8 stories are cleared, the final story is unlocked, which features the final boss. Many secret characters are unlocked by completing the storylines.

Gameplay

SEGA vs. Capcom: Fighters of the Millennium is a fighting game. Being co-developed by Capcom, a company with long history in fighting games, its gameplay mechanics are closest to those of Marvel vs. Capcom and the Street Fighter games. Players basically choose up to 3 characters and fight against another team, played either by a second player or by the computer. Like in the aforementioned games, the player may switch between the three characters during gameplay or summon one of them for assistance. The aim is to deplete the life gauge of all 3 oppossing fighters. Players may perform intricate combos using the classic mechanics of the four button system. During the game, there is a Hyper Combo bar on the bottom corner of the screen which gradually fills up and allows for execution of Hyper Combos. These are special attacks that can only be executed

SEGA announcing their first 6 character inclusions during the game's announcement, 2014.

by inputting a specific command and decrease the gauge to a certain amount after being activated to a certain degree, based on their strength.

However, SEGA vs. Capcom: Fighters of the Millennium also introduces new gameplay mechanics. One of these is the ability to perform a Millennium Hyper Combo, where two partnered characters can execute a unique, special Hyper Combo together, by summoning the assist character and then inputting a Hyper Combo command. For instance, while playing as Akira, the player can summon Ryu as assist and then input a Hyper Combo command. Akira and Ryu will perform a special Hyper Combo together that deals massive damage. Each character has a different Millennium Hyper Combo depending on which character they are partnered with. Some have more than one, however, only specific character pairs have these Millennium Hyper Combos.

Furthermore, the game features a completely new Story Mode. While it also features the classic Arcade mode, Story mode is a completely different inclusion. Here, the player may select up to 10 different stories, each of which features a number of characters, stages and Bosses, centered around a plot. Enemies are battled in the same way as in normal fighting games, but the stages are side scrolling, much like the Subspace Emissary but with classic fighting game mechanics. Another new inclusion is Fighters of the Millennium. This mode works similarly to a board game and enables the player to battle against enemy teams and earn territories while winning special prizes, unlocking hidden characters and battling against fearsome Boss battles. Mission Mode and Online also return. Online is very similar to the Fighters of the Millennium mode, although normal battles as those in Arcade are also present. X factor also returns.

The game features characters from various universes from both companies SEGA and Capcom. Characters are divided into starter characters, who are available from the start of the game, and unlockable characters, who need to be unlocked by completing a certain task. There are 50 starter characters, 25 from each company and 24 unlockables, 12 from each company, bringing the total number of characters to 74. It is obvious that each character has their very own unique style of gameplay, some even having their very own different gameplay mechanics. There are, however, some characters that could be considered as clones.

Character Endings

Upon completing Arcade with a specific character, that character's ending is unlocked. Character endings are short movie clips that show what happens with that character after the Creator is reassembled with his core

Stages

There are 29 stages in total, of which 8 are from SEGA titles, 8 from Capcom and 13 original based on levels from Story Mode. The asterisk denotes unlockable stage.

SEGA logo

  • Green Hill Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog: Green Hill Zone from the original 1991 Sonic the Hedgehog game. There is a loop-de-loop in the background, along with beautiful waterfalls, palm trees and canyons. Animal friends can also be seen cheering for the player.
  • Samba Studios - Samba de Amigo: Takes place in a parade themed city, with a dancing crowd and buildings that move to the beat.
  • Shibuya Downtown - Jet Set Radio: Takes place in street of Tokyo; gangs and policemen can be seen in the background. Sometimes the stage will switch to night time.
    361

    Carrier Zone

  • Carrier Zone - Afterburner: This is pretty much the same stage from Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed. You fight on an aerodrome on top of a battleship. Airships can be seen landing and taking off in the background.
  • Paradiso - Bayonetta: As its name implies, it is an idyllic environment with angelic temples and dense vegetation. Angelic beings can also be seen from time to time flying in the sky.
  • Eastern Gate - Total War: You fight on a Japanese, war-time castle, with a war taking place in the background. This stage does not actually appear in any Total War game, but serves as a representative of the series.
  • *Playroom - Clockwork Knight: You fight inside a children's playroom, with various toys watching and cheering in the background.
  • *LAS SEGAS - This stage does not appear in any SEGA game. It is, however, partly based off the famous Las Vegas city, except that here everything seems to be themed after SEGA, like a huge SEGA amusement park at nighttime.

Logoty

  • Wily's Castle - Megaman: A darker version of Dr. Wily's castle from Megaman. It actually does not bare much resemblance to the original design because of its dark tone and colour. Battleships and rockets can be seen in the background.
  • Karma Fortress - Asura's Wrath: A massive construct in the shape of a human head that floats in space. Players actually fight on a wide platform with unseen edges that takes the player around the fortress.
    Pg25

    Karma Fortress

  • Mall - DeadRising: There is an escalator in the background to the left and a wide hallway with shops to the right. The Mall is filled with zombies, which only appear as background characters and have no impact on the gameplay whatsoever.
  • Tricel Laboratory - Resident Evil: Another returning stage from Marvel vs. Capcom 3. It does look, however, somewhat different than before as it takes place in another part of the laboratory.
  • Monster Jungle - Monster Hunter: A jungle with monsters, what else did you expect?
  • Station Myria - Breath of Fire: The stage is basically a green plain. The Station of Myria can be spotted in the background, along with a sea and some islands.
  • *Iron Horse, Iron Terror - Vampire Saviour: The Lord of Vampire: A haunted train that also seems to be alive. It has been heavily redesigned from its appearance in Vampire Saviour.
  • *Days of Old - Steel Battalion: You basically fight in the midst of war going on between an army of humans and robots, namely Steel Battalion mechs. Some of them can be seen in the background while most of it is covered in debris.

Original Stages

  • *Training Room: The training room is similar to the one in the Marvel vs. Capcom series. There is a screen in the background which shows character profiles and occasionally the game's intro.
  • McGlanke Theatre: Players fight on a theatre stage. A vast crowd can be seen in the background cheering for the players.
  • Habunda Happening: A massive, ancient, upside-down, spiral, black, pyramid-like structure floating in the sky, above a metropolis. Only a part of the vessel is shown, as it is seen coming out of a cumulonimbus. There seems to be an attack in the city by the forces of the ancient vessel. The sky is red-orange as in sundown. Ancient battleships can also be seen exiting and landing in the hangar of the structure.
  • Uranus Achieves: There is a series of huge library shelves made of marble on the left side of the screen filled with books and other strange looking objects; as the player moves to the right, the shelves begin to end, the books begin to float in the air and a beautiful sky of purple colour and clouds can be seen, indicating that the library is in fact hovering in the sky.
  • Clock Tower Heights: You fight on a wooden platform inside a medieval clock tower. The clock tower is unusually tall and the platform continuously ascends like an elevator. There is no wall on the background, making the village visible to the player. Once the platform reaches the top, the entire village is visible from above. The bell is rang and the platform starts descending.
  • Skyport City: A city that is built on top of a series of huge battleships soaring through the blue sky. The background here is beautiful, you can see an entire armada passing through the clouds.
  • Four Seasons of Doom: A stage that interchanges between 4 sceneries, depending on the season. It is located in a forest.
  • Samsara Future Port: This stage is located in a futuristic, Japanese themed harbour. There are ships coming and going and a huge metropolis seen in the background, presumably the same that is being attacked in Habunda Happening.
  • Vessel of Calling: Ancient ruins, partially submerged under water and covered in vegetation. Statues dispersed between trees and vines can be seen in the background, as well as a long hallway. It takes place presumably inside the floating, pyramid-like megastructure from Habunda Happening.
  • Cosmic Cruise: A stage that is located in outer space. Players fight on spaceship that flies throughout a gigantic space city. The background, therefore, constantly changes. An armada of spaceships can sometimes be seen, the gigantic city or black holes, planets and meteorites.
  • Astral Utopia X-10000: This stage is located in one of the skyscrapers of the city that appears in the background of Cosmic Cruise. In the background of the stage, numerous other skyscrapers are visible, including stars and other planets.
  • *The Final Battle: A distorted version of Steps to Creation; takes place on top of the megastructure in Vessel of Calling. In Story Mode, it is where you fight the final Boss of the game, The Creator. The stage is collapsing and it seems as if it is travelling through various different dimensions, judging from its strange background.
  • *Steps to Creation: This stage takes place after the final battle. The megastructure seen in Habunda Happening is starting to rebuild itself after the damages it sustained by reassembling its collapsed pieces. Floors, walls, statues and bridges can be seen floating around it as they are reincorporated in the megastructure. Its colour changes from black to white and its textures change, gaining a more utopian appearance. Vegetation starts to grow and covers certain areas of the construct while water also starts to flow by forming channels and fountains. The fighters battle on a platform that ascends throughout the length of the construct until the platform reaches the apex, where the entire superstructure can be seen in the background, signaling the coming of the new world.

Modes

Arcade

Like in most, if not every, fighting games, SEGA vs. Capcom: Fighters of the Millennium features an Arcade Mode, which works basically the same way as it does in every other fighting game. Arcade Mode has historically derived from arcade versions of the games. This was later incorporated in home console versions when arcades became less popular. The player selects a team of three characters and, after selecting the difficulty between Easy, Normal, Hard and Expert, he/she progresses against 6 matches with teams consisting of random characters, controlled by the computer.

After those 6 matches, the player faces off against a Boss. The Boss for all difficulties is the same and is Dr. Wily, from Megaman, piloting a huge machine, which, according to the game's storyline, is keeping the Creator's hammer away from the heroes. Defeating the Boss with a specific character will unlock that character's ending. Character endings are short animated clips associated with that specific character. They usually form part of the story; that is, they happen at some point during the story of the game, or after it thus shedding some light in unexplained parts of the story. In higher difficulties, players may also unlock costumes for the character and artworks. The most valuable prize, however, are secret characters. Some secret characters may be unlocked by completing Arcade mode with a particular character or under certain conditions. At the end of the game, the player's score is calculated by the computer and recorded by the game's data.

Story Mode

Story mode is one of the game's main modes of offline gameplay. It is basically a side-scroller game, akin to the Subspace Emissary from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but adapted to the game's controls and gameplay style. Story Mode, however, is not one lengthy story, but an anthology of 8 different stories, which are interconnected around one central plot, the one described in the Story section of the page

The stories feature different plot each, with different cast of characters, 6 stages maximum and a Boss fight. They are not very lengthy but nevertheless, game progress can be saved automatically. Cutscenes use CGI animation and do not feature any dialogue, but only music, such as to resemble music videos, similarly to the movie clips from Marvel vs. Capcom 3. At the start of the game, only stories 1 and 2 are available; the rest can be unlocked by first unlocking the characters. This is done in order to avoid any spoilers. Some characters may appear in more than 1 story, but each character is playable in only 1 of them. Here is just an example of how a story would be like:

Story 2: Story 2 takes place in a samurai, war-time era wasteland. There is a battle between the forces of good, led by Date Masamune and his small army and the forces of evil, led by Shogun and his vast army. Shogun resides inside his heavily armed japanese fortress, which Date and his army plan to infiltrate. They fight bravely against Shogun's army, until Date, Yukimura and Joe Musashi reach the castle, where they battle against Selvaria Bles. When Date's army fighting outside is on the verge of defeat, back-up forces arrive, lead by Strider, Amaterasu and Gilius, and crush Shogun's army. After the team reaches Shogun's throne room and battle against Rathalos, the stage boss, the Shogun vanishes, ending the story in a cliffhanger.

There are 8 Bosses in story mode in total. These are Wizeman the Wicked from NiGHTS, Rathalos from Monster Hunter, Wyzen from Asura's Wrath and Temperantia from Bayonetta. Each of them are fought twice, since each appears in two stories. The Final Boss is The Creator. He has three forms and is fought in the stage The Final Battle. The Creator's first form is an amorphous, black smoke with shapeshifting abilities, the second from is an apocalyptic, angelic being, which is fought only from the torso and above. The third form has his legs also visible and flies around the battlefield.

Story 1 would take place in a a magical realm, divided into two levels, the underworld, which would feature Dante and Bayonetta fighting each other but ending up teaming up to fend off Wizeman's army, and the higher levels, where NiGHTS and other characters would exists. They would fight against Oichi and Wizeman's army, eventually traveling underground to team up with Dante and Bayonetta and defeat Wizeman.

Story 3 would take place in Skyport City, a metropolis built on massive airships, floating in the blue sky. Dr. Eggman invades this city in search of the Creator's Hammer. However, a resistance is formed to fend off his army of robots, composed of various characters, predominantly Sonic and X.

Story 4 would feature a zombie-infestated neighbourhood, where Frank West, the Rub Rabbits Leader, Phoenix Wright and Sketch Turner would join forces to fight against zombies, led by Nemesis.

Story 5 would feature a number of different characters from both universes battling against Sigma and his army in a huge space station, which is responsible for overseeing both worlds. Characters would include Micah, Beast, Ulala, Zero, Nilin, Sam and Jill. The end result would be the destruction and siege of the space station by Sigma and the escape of Zero to contact allied forces.

Stories 6, 7 and 8 would pick up from where the previous stories left and continue them until the Final Story. More characters would be introduced, including different sub-plots, such as battling against the Magician and his army of zombies, fighting against Dr. Wily and the infiltration of the enemy base by Silver, Chris, Alicia, Ichiro, Strider etc.. They would all team up to fight against Vergil, Selvaria Bles and her army of Steel Battalions guarding the entrance. Other environments would include a monastery in the mountains and the Colony of Pathos, on which the stage Four Seasons of Death is based on.

The Final Story would involve all characters infiltrating the floating citadel in Habunda Happening above a metropolis. After reaching the top they confront the Creator himself. Upon reuniting him with his Hammer, the Creator is brought back to his original form and the world restored.

Fighters of the Millennium

Fighters of the Millennium is a mode in which players divide into 3 teams and take turns to defeat the opposing teams by fighting each other's teams in matches, akin to a boardgame. The rules are the following. First, you build a team consisting of 6 to 12 characters. Then, you are placed in a map consisting of irregularly placed squares, together with 2 opposing teams. Each team starts off at a different location in the map, having 8 squares in their possession. Each team takes turns by rolling a dice. The team moves a number of squares equal to the result of the die they rolled and they can move at any direction. If team X moves into a square(s) that do not pertain to any team, these squares become part of team X's possession. If team X rolls a dice and moves into a square(s) that pertain to team Y, then these two teams battle each other in a fight. The player may select any of the characters he has in his team. The victor gains the squares. The purpose of the game is to conquer all of the squares that are in possession of the two opposing teams, not necessarily all of the squares in the map. Alternatively, the player may take down the square with the opposing team's Millennium Tower. The Millennium Tower is usually the square that is surrounded by the iniitial squares of team team. To conquer it, however, the player must fight against all of the members of the team one after the other in the same fight.

Like in all boardgames, the squares come with multiple and diverse surprises. There are 8 types of squares. They may:

  • Contain a hidden character that must be fought in order to be unlocked.
  • Contain a Boss fight.
  • Transport the player to a different, hidden part of the map.
  • Uncover a hidden gimmick of the map, for example uncover a shortcut.
  • Feature special gimmicks, such as towers or Millennium Towers. A team that conquers a square with a tower can, once per turn, target 1 square anywhere in the map and challenge the opposing team that has that square to a fight. These squares are hard ot obtain. Millennium Towers are the ones that were explained previously. There is one for each team.
  • Contain an Assist Character.

In addition, they may simple have to effect whatsoever. An important thing to note here are Assist Characters. Assist Characters appear when the player steps on a square with an assist character on it. Amongst the 30 different Assist Characters, one will randomly appear. Assist Characters will grant the player a special effect that can either help him/her in the map screen or during the fight. There are 15 from Capcom amd 15 from SEGA. They can be summoned to activate their effect either immediately after they are acquired or later during the game. For example, Tails can fly the player from one square to another one on the map screen, while Ruby Heart can increase the player's luck in the dice roll.

There are three levels of this game, with each level having a different map. The first map contains a Japanese, wartime-era wasteland with a castle, a forest and snowy mountains. The second one contains a metropolis, a sea with islands and some floating islands along with a city in the sky. The third level takes place in space; it features various asteroids, small planets, enormous space stations and alternate worlds. It also features black holes that teleport the player to different areas in the map. All these environments are based off of the ones that appear in Story Mode.
