10 Minutes till The Ren Faire Opens![]
It's bright and early on a Saturday morning, and many people have lined up to enter the Empire City Renaissance Faire during this warm summer day. It's out in the rural part of the city, surrounded by nature. It's picturesque just from the entrance alone, with its many flags and statues preparing to send you back in time for a day in ye olde medieval times! Many performers were already out and about, entertaining the masses that waited in line for the Queen to announce the opening of the faire to the public. Some played lutes, while others played drums or bagpipes. It was quite the sight to see!
Edmund takes a deep breathe and sighs, "Wow! What an incredible turn out!" He was completely decked out in gear. From a long flowing cloak to a sword on his hip, he'd waited for this day for the last year! He and his family had made a habit of visiting the faire every weekend it was active, but this would be his first time going on his own for the first time. He even planned on buying some new dice for his table top hobby!
"Getting nostalgic, Maeve?", a raven in a green cloak asked the horned sheep in mostly gothic attire next to him who looked towards him abd snorted. Nearby was a gecko dressed as a peasant, "God, my clothes from back home fit so perfectly here..". She was fidgeting with her dress. A horned cloaked creature chuckled, "Hey, at least they have basic amenities here~.".
"Hmph, Becky did a great job on our costumes." Makenzie smirked. She and her friend Narcissa were dressed up as pink as they could be, dawning large sparkling crowns and flowing gowns. "Now it's socially acceptable to call all of those losers commoners." Narcissa smirked, flashing her tooth gap while Makenzie smirked and laughed.
"Why did you drag me out here, Edmund? It's already hot..." Fiona whined. Edmund sighed, "Fiona, learn to have some fun before you ruin your teen years with nothing but stress and school work!" The excited walrus responded.
"This is gonna be so awesome!" Ash fist pumped. She wore a sort of bandit/pirate get up while Tom and Nathan were pretty casual. Alex definitely leaned into the dressing up, as did Annabelle. It took a lot of convincing but she managed to get Jason to dress as a pirate while the she wolf was an aristocrat-esque character with a cute tiny hat on her head. She even carried a parasol to help with the Summer sun.
Ms. Brown was giddy, wearing her own get up as a witchy character, and her students from BHS were just as dressed up. Penelope had taken it upon herself to help Calliope and Katalina with their costumes, so all three were dressed as fairies.
Two men exited the entrance of the faire and played their trumpets.
"Now announcing her majesty, Queen Elizabeth the II! God save the queen!" One of them said.
"God save the queen!!" Edmund cheered, taking Fiona by surprise.
The woman playing the queen walked out, dawned in historically accurate clothing that must have been super heavy, "I thank you all for joining us on this day for festivities, food, and togetherness! Please be merry and welcome to our humble festival!" She called out. "Huzzah!" Edmund cheered, and the gates opened for the waiting guests.
There were musicians, actors dressed as pirates and Robin Hood, as well as the smell of giant turkey legs, fried food, and other delectable items.
Ms. Brown clapped, "Lets get a move on, ladies!"
"Hmph. Lets see what this is all about then." Narcissa smirked. Penelope and her friends took each others hands and headed inside.
"I'm gonna get a sword." Alex said with an evil tone. Tom blinked. "Eeeh, as long as they peace tie it." He said, "We should go see the castle! I heard the guy that built it actually LIVES in it!" Jason blinked, "He does?"
"Apparently." Annabelle said, looking at the map and attached schedule of events, "He's been building on it for about 30 years. He's working on a huge ballroom and banquet room for people who wanna rent it for weddings."
"Honestly I don't see what all the fuss is about.", a buff teenage python shook his head as he looked around, he was dressed as the black knight. Next to him was a small frog girl dressed as a princess, "It's kinda like Halloween, but in one specific place, Sylas.".
"I don't follow..", the snake raised his eyebrow at Hecate. Before the frog could speak up again, two dogs dressed up as witches wandered over to the two.
"I think what Helen is getting at is it's supposed to be fun! Like we're pretending we're back in the medieval era!", the pug with glasses explained to him further to no avail.
"I can't imagine pretending to live like back then.", Sylas looked over the faire, though his head was hidden through his helmet, "Life was worse for both mortals and supernaturals back then.".
The faire was soo bustling as Edmund pulled along Fiona to one of the stalls selling D&D related items. He eyed a collection of Jade dice with wide eyes. "Aaah! Luckily my parents gave me a little extra to splurge after acing that biology test last week! I can't wait to see what I can find for my LARPing!" He says with glee. Fiona rolls her eyes, irritated. "I jushtt don't shee why people wasshte their time out in the hot sshun wearing bulky clothes...I could have gotten shho much shhtudying done. This is-"
"SHH." Edmund shushed her. "Fiona, if you keep on the path you're on, you're gonna work yourself to death. Take a break, stop and smell the roses! And find yourself something you think is interesting to take home! It's either that, or wait on the bus for the next 6 hours. Your choice. But I will be indulging and having a marvelous time!" He said, turning to make conversation with the shop keep. He wanted to be friends with Fiona, but it didn't help that she hated anything that wasn't school work. The mouse huffed and glared at him as she left to walk around by herself.
Ms. Brown took a deep breathe, "Aaah, the food smells incredible! Oh! Ladies!" She turned to Penelope, Calliope, and Katalina, "I'm going to go get us some water. It's quite warm out today and we MUST stay hydrated!"
"Oh, thank you Ms. Brown!" Calliope smiled as the woman nodded and went to get some beverages. The moth looked around, "This is so cool...I've never been to one of these before!" She said excitedly, "I love all the costumes and stuff!!" She said. Katalina grinned, "Me too!! I've always wanted to go because I just like dressing up! Ohoh, Penelope, thank you for helping with the costumes...!"
The squirrel smiled, "Aw, it was nothin, really! I'm a cosplayer so I know my way around a sewing machine..." She blushed.
Annabelle looked at the schedule, "The first joust of the day isn't for a while, so we can definitely go and see the castle. Probably not a lot of people up there anyway." She said as Jason nodded. Ash licked her lips, "Aw man...I need one of those turkey legs before they sell out..." She said, her stomach groaning in agreement, despite having had a huge breakfast that morning.
Two hawks and a blue rabbit walked around the faire staring at everything in awe. The larger female hawk was dawning knights armor as the shorter hawk dressed as royalty held onto her hand. "I see you're enjoying yourself, Miss Vanity.", Alpha, the larger hawl, noted the shorter women regard her with eyes of longing. Vanity sighed happily, "Well of course I am, Alice, it's not every day we get to go on a trip. Also, please drop the Miss from the sentence... It's a little ....weird.".
"Tsk, it's already so hot." Narcissa whined, "Lets get something to drink." The Maltese said, before they grabbed some bottled water. "Ugh, its the cheap bottled water. Whatever. Better than getting heat stroke." Makenzie huffed and took a sip. "Lets go see that show with the fire juggling weirdos. I heard they throw knives and stuff too." "Oh totally! I wanna take a selfie with some of them!"
Fiona wandered around with a sour look on her face. She noticed some crowns for sale and looked at them, "Wasshte of time..." "Like what you see?" The similarly-aged sales keep asked. She shook her head, "No, I'm fine." She said. The boy shrugged, "Doesn't hurt to try them on, right?" He asked. Fiona hesitated, until she spotted a gold and emerald crown that caught her eye, "They're...nice looking." "Go ahead, try it on! Here, I'll help you." After some further convincing, Fiona is wearing the crown and staring at herself in a mirror. "Try letting your hair down." He said. She nods and undoes her messy bun. "It...looks...nice..." She said. The boy smirked, "Fit for a princess such as yourself!" He smiled. Fiona flushed, "Royalty gets a discount~" He winked. She blinked and took off the crown. It was decently priced, and her father insisted she take a good amount of cash. If it hadn't been for her dad and Edmund, she wouldn't have arrived with any cash. But she needed to buy food at one point. Plus she promised to bring her father something back. "O...OK. If itssh the one thing I buy mysshelf." She said. She paid for the crown, and he made sure to give her a receipt. "Your majesty~" He bowed to her, making the ugly mouse smile and flush harder as she waved and walked off. Wow...did she actually feel...pretty for once?
Alex and her crew get onto a bus to travel across the way to the castle and indulge in the tours of the massive land and the interior.
"Do you think they have anything a little ~romantic~ here this early, Maeve, or will we have to wait til later?", Endor teased the women who glared straight at him. A smirk formed on her face, "Even if there was, do you think I'd spend it with you, Ethan?".
"Ah, only talkative when you want to insult me~. Such a shame, I thought I'd have a good time with you today.", the raven replied dramatically, "I guess not.". The ewe would give him another glare before grabbing the nerdy, lanky man by his hand and dragging him along with her. Endor was immediately flustered by the action.
The Queen walked through with her court, talking to patrons and other actors while taking photos with whomever would like them.
"Lets meet the queen!" Katalina said, as the girls headed over, but Edmund beat them to it.
"Your royal majesty! It is an honor and a privilege to see thy presence in person!" Edmund said, completely in character. The Queen smiled, "What a charming and noble adventurer! What is your name, good sir?" She asked. Edmund beamed, "I am Sir Edmund, your majesty! At your service my liege!" He said with a deep bow. Calliope giggled, "I love this...everyone is so in character...!" Penelope stared, "Wow, his costume is great. Did he make it himself?"
"Oh! Oh I'm so sorry, fae folk! I didn't meant to get in your way! Please." Edmund said towards the girls, who giggled playfully to one another. They got their photos with the Queen just as Ms. Brown returned with their waters.
"Ah! Girls! Here you are!" She handed out the water.
Lerina eyed up some of the stalls as she walked around with Zidru and Zath. Before she would walk up to one she noted Zidru right next to her, "Why are you two hiding yourselves in cloaks anyway? I don't think anyone here would care that you're Zeti. You could probably get away with it, too.".
"You say that like everyone's accepting of Zeti. I personally don't want to run the risk of being chased off.", the shorter figure would answer her, "Besides, we kinda look like demons like this!".
"He's got a point Lerina... The first part I mean.", the taller figure would say, before self consciously grabbing one of his horns. The gecko shrugged as she headed towards one of the stalls with the two tailing her.
Makenzie and Narcissa find themselves browsing jewelry that they find fits their costumes. They look in the mirrors on display for them to use and continue to browse after they purchase some necklaces and matching earring sets.
"Aw, HELL yeah!" Ash plops down with her posse as she unwraps a fresh, giant turkey leg. "Been waitin all year for this!" The porcupine digs in, licking her lips. "So good!" Nathan unwraps his own and starts eating while Alex and Tom share their own.
Calliope reaches out to Edmund. "Excuse me...um, do you wanna...hang out with us? Your costume is so cool!" She asks. Penelope glances over and nods. "Yeah, Im a cosplayer and I'd love to get some tips from you." The squirrel asks. Edmund beams, "Oh yes yes of course! I'd love to!"
Mostly by himself since the girls went off with Hecate, the golden retriever dressed up in full armor wandered around the part to take a look at the sites, "I'd love to come back here with William someday.. I bet he'd love it."
Unbeknownst to him, his friend dressed as a monk would appear not to far from him. "Arhh, thhe goirls lefft youu too?", Scott would turn to see Ruffino gorging himself on various foods throughout the faire. He shook his head, "I see you're in your element.. I don't mind the girls leaving, I like being alone for a change..". The brown mutt would swallow, "Fair, though I'm pretty sure that you're put the girls don't bother you much now?".
"They don't, but strangers still do..", the buffer dog said before witnessing his friend pick his turkey leg clean, "How do you stay so... Skinny?". Ruffino shrugged, "Loooks limmke another mytereeff!".
Edmund finds himself hanging out with the girls until they find some games. "Oooh, knife throwing? Archery? I want to try!" Calliope announced, before quickly rushing up to the stall. "How marvelous! So many activities to engage in!" Edmund smiles, "I think I'll try the axe throw!" He says, being followed by Penelope while Katalina follows Calliope to the archery booth.
"Everyone gets 10 arrows to try! If you get a bullseye, you get a prize!" The man in charge stated. Calliope grins and pays for both her and Katalina's arrows, before they get a quick lesson and let them fly.
Mikela wanders around the faire, as she doesn't seem to have any motives or goals while there. "Oh...nice cloaks..." She mutters while stopping at one of the booths.
Ash finishes her turkey leg all by herself, licking her lips and chugging down whatever is left of her soda. "Ah man...I'm set for the rest of the day after that!!" The porcupine says, while Nathan stares at her in disbelief. Annabelle eats like she hasn't done so in days, shocking Jason who's taken aback by her ravenous appetite. "What? It's really good..." The she wolf raises an eyebrow at him before she continues to feast.
Fiona stops to buy a drink of water, and even finds a nice, custom mug to put her beverage in. She takes a seat, shocked at how many actors greet her with a bow, and a 'good morning, your majesty.' It feels so weird to be interacted with so...nicely! This crown was starting to grow on her...
"Fulgy FIONA? That crown does NOT suit you." Makenzie hisses as she and Narcissa catch themselves walking by. "Haha! Totally. You're more like the hunchback or an ugly step sister. Royalty doesn't suit you like it does US." The Maltese asked. Fiona huffed and hung her head as the two glared at her from behind fancy folding fans they'd just dropped who knows how much on.
Nearby Hecate walked alongside Peggie and Justine, the latter two just happening to hear the Maltese and Dalmatian's insults towards the mouse. The frog instantly turned towards the two dogs with her, already very well aware how both girls tended to interfere with other people's drama all the time. The Pug and Poodle looked at each other and nodded in agreement, before both dogs dressed as witches headed over.
"Hey! Who are you to say what suits someone?", the blonde poodle spoke up first before her nerdier, more gothic looking friend got a word in. The pug would speak afterwards, "Yeah! I think she looks really dignified and pretty in her crown and costume!". Hecate simply watched on as the actual witch wasn't a fan of confrontation like her friends were.
Fiona started to hang her head a bit, clutching her mug to her chest. Makenzie scoffs, "The coven is coming to the rescue, how cute. We're just getting in the spirit of the faire, and treating this peasant like she deserves." The Dalmatian shrugs innocently while Narcissa is much to busy giggling and flashing her tooth gap at the strangers. "It'sshh fine. I'm usshed to it." The mouse mumbles.
Edmund lifts his axe over his head and gives it a good chuck, cheering as he gets it stuck right into his desired target. Penelope cheers for him as well as he receives his prize, "That was amazing...!" The squirrel gushes. "Ah, not as amazing as you are, my kind fae folk!" The tall walrus responds. Whenever he was in costume and in character, he couldn't help but get much more confident, and the blush on his new friends face shows. Ms. Brown smirks at their interaction from afar. Ah, young love.
"If she were a peasant, why is she wearing a crown then, hmm?", the pug puts her hand on her hip before Justine glances over towards Fiona. The poodle gently places her hand on the mouse's shoulder and shakes her head, "Well you shouldn't be, no one deserves to be insulted like that.".
In her hesitance, Hecate wandered over towards her two friends, however her meekness about the whole ordeal kept her mouth shit for the time being.
