Marsha & Gunner (マーシャ·ガンナー Māsha· gan'nā) is a platform game that features Marsha the Fox and Gunner the Sackperson, who are both on a mission to save their friends and defeat the Collector.

The story begins with the duo sleeping under the tree. Tails was with them too (but was kidnapped (or foxnapped) by the Collector). They soon discover that their friends have all been kidnapped by the Collector and they go after him. After going through each zone, they must fight Runner, who has been talked into being evil and fighting her brother and best friend. They finally reach Collector's base, in where they must fight Dragon Slayer, Anti-Gunner and Anti-Marsha. Finally, they defeat the Collector and save their friends.

However, they must also collect the Chaos Emeralds as well. If they do, it triggers a "good future," where runner lives. In the "bad future," Runner dies.

Bosses

The boss is mainly Runner in a mech. In the thrid of level of each act (except Collector's base). 6 hits are only needed to defeat the boss, except the final, which is 13.

Gameplay

Single Player

The player finishes each level, generally moving from left to right. Along the way, rings are collected and Badniks are defeated. Star posts serve as checkpoints, where if the player were to lose a life then he or she would return to one.At the begining of Act 3, Marsha, Gunner or both confronts Runner.

Special Stages track Marsha/Gunner/Both from behind while he/she/they runs through a (semi-) three-dimensional half-pipe course filled with rings and bombs. A certain amount of rings must be collected to pass through two checkpoints and then obtain the emerald itself. If the player runs into one of the many bombs (increasing in number as the emeralds are captured) he will lose a set amount of rings, varying depending on the stage. The order of stages is fixed in rising difficulty, and either/both cannot enter the next stage without passing the previous. Whether the player is able to obtain the emerald or not, Marsha/Gunner/Both is transported back to the last star post he hit in the zone when the special stage is over and has zero rings.

From the options menu, players can select to either play as Marsha alone, Gunner alone or Marsha and Gunner. During the Marsha and Gunner story, you can play as one and then switch to the other.

Marsha & Gunner's Abilities

Walk Pressing left or right on the control pad to initiate either's movement in either direction. As you hold the button down, both gains speed.
Run Begin walking and hold down the button to make both gain speed. After a few seconds, he'll break into a run.
Screech Halt While running, quickly press and hold the opposite direction on the D-pad to make either screech to a halt. Both will skid for a short distance, based on how fast they was moving.
Look Up While standing still, press up to make either gaze to the sky. Continue holding up for a few moments and the camera pans upward, giving you a view of both's overhead surroundings.
Crouch While standing still, press down to make either duck down. As you hold down, the camera pans downward, giving you a view of the stage beneath where either stands.
Spin While moving, press down to make either curl into a rolling attack. Both remain in this position until you jump or slow down. The speed of both's movement while in spin mode is based on how fast you're moving when you launch it, and also on the terrain either rolls along.
Push Some items can be pushed by running up against them. Continue holding the controler against the spring to have either player push it into the wall.

Two Player

In two player versus mode, players compete against each other - either as Marsha or Gunner - in a split-screen race through three regular zones and one special stage. Regular zones include Frozen Hill, BINGO Freeway and Sky Road, while the Special Stage remains the same as in single player. In the regular levels, players are ranked in five areas (score, time, rings held at the end of the level, total rings collected, and number of item boxes broken), with the player scoring highest in the most levels winning the round, while in the Special Stage, players compete to obtain the most rings.

Special Stages

In Gunner and Marsha, there are 7 Special Stages. When either has collected at least 50 rings and either one hits a Star Post, either one can go to a special stage.

Special Stages track the player from behind while he runs through a three-dimensional half-pipe course filled with rings and bombs. A set amount of rings must be collected to pass through three checkpoints and eventually obtain the emerald itself. The order of stages is fixed in rising difficulty, and either cannot enter the next stage without passing the previous. Whether the player is able to obtain the emerald or not, the one who was in the Special Stage is transported back to the last lamp post he/she hit in the zone when the special stage is over and has zero rings.

Trivia

  • Previous Sonic games are represented in this game.
    • The Power Plant zone from Sonic Heroes returns in this game as the second zone.
    • Westopolis from Shadow the Hedgehog also returns.
    • A version of Sky Road from Sonic Lost World is also seen.
    • Frozen Hill Zone was based off of Green Hil Zone, except it's covered in ice and snow.
  • Elements of Sonic 2 is also represented.
    • The player must collect the Coas Emeralds, if they don't Runner dies in an alternate timeline
    • In the title card, Gunner first pops up giving a thumbs-up, then Marsha pops up second and gives a peace sign.
    • The Special Stage also appears to be exactly like the Special Stage from Sonic 2.
