When Sonic Amy, and Tails go to save Cream from Dr.Eggman's HQ, Eggman uses the seven chaos emeralds to transport all three of them into space surrounded by planets. Then, all of the chaos emeralds disappear. Suddenly, a door appears that leads into another dimension, which happens to be the Sol Dimension, where they meet Blaze and Silver. The two agree to help Sonic, Amy and Cream return to Mobius by finding the chaos emeralds, one in each door. They are also assisted by Nimbus the Fairy.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog is a laid back hero meant to symbolize peace. Well-known for his legendary cocky attitude, easy-going demeanor and somewhat short temper, yet strong sense of justice and love for freedom and adventure, Sonic uses his abilities to protect the innocent and his world (as well as many others) from the forces of evil, especially his arch-nemesis Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik who seeks world domination. |

Miles Prower, better known by his nickname, Tails is an 8 year-old yellow-orange, anthropomorphic fox with two tails, hence his nickname. He is known to be Sonic's best friend, sidekick, and an expert mechanic. He is able to use his two tails to travel at super speed as well as propel himself into the air like a helicopter. |

Amy Rose
Amy Rose is a fictional, anthropomorphic pink hedgehog from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She has a major long-standing crush on Sonic the Hedgehog, and has been trying to win his heart by any means since meeting him. Such methods included impressing him by fighting robots, and threatening to leave him locked in prison on Prison Island. She uses her piko piko hammer to fight, which she keeps in HammerSpace. |

Blaze the Cat
Blaze the Cat is a fictional, anthropomorphic cat. She is often described to be elegant and normally speaks in a formal lady-like tone since she is a princess. She is likewise very serious and devoted to her duties as a regent over her people and guardian of the Sol Emeralds. However, her duties and her self-imposed strict discipline have made her rather anti-social and withdrawn, causing her to be wary and curt towards people she does not know. She appears at most times to be calm, solemn and level headed, because she conceals her true feelings. She uses the power of pyrokinesis and superspeed to fight off bad guys. |

Silver the Hedgehog
Silver the Hedgehog is a fictional anthropomorphic silver-colored hedgehog. Silver hails from at least 200 years into the future where his role is to protect the future by changing the problems or catastrophes in the past, thus preventing the ruination of his time. He is a kind-hearted, positive and well-meaning individual, driven by a strong sense of justice to right the wrongs of the past to uphold peace, though he tends to be somewhat naive and immature. To aid him in his tasks to save the future, Silver makes use of his psychokinetic abilities, an ability from his time that is considered second-nature, that allows him to levitate and control objects and himself simply with the power of his mind. |

Nimbus the Fairy
Nimbus is a powerful fairy and ruler off all dimensions. She was soon losing control of this power, and said it was destiny that Sonic and the gang came along. After the Sonic Team restores one dimension and finds a chaos emerald, Nimbus has the power to open another dimension door. Her role in the game is very similar to Chip's role in Sonic Unleashed. | |||

Cream the Rabbit
Cream the Rabbit is a fictional, anthropomorphic, cream colored rabbit. She has a bond with a Chao named Cheese, who follows her everywhere, and though she is the youngest female character, being six years old, she is not afraid to stand up for herself. She is a bit naive at times. Just as Tails is the sidekick of Sonic, Cream serves the same purpose for Amy Rose and Blaze the Cat. Cream is a princess-like figure; she is polite, just, follows manners (and never forgets them) and does what she is told. | |||

Modes[]
Adventure Mode[]
The single player mode where you take on the adventures of dimension traveling as Sonic. When selecting it, you are taken to a hub world with 7 different doors leading into other dimensions. After you go through one door and receive the chaos emerald inside, another door opens up. Up to two people can play, and get to chose from Sonic, Tails, Blaze, Silver, and Amy.
Classic Simulator[]
This is a simulator made by Eggman that copies the DNA of Sonic and friends to simulate them into robots that look like their Classic Form. You can use them to run through special courses and earn skill points to make Sonic play better in story mode (1-4 players) The playable characters are:

- Classic Blaze
- Classic Silver
- Classic Shadow (Earned by reaching Skill Level #10)
Time Attack[]
This is where you try to run for the fastest time in any stage you've unlocked in Story mode.

Sonic Dimensions has received many reviews. Eurogamers rated it a 8.5 out of 10, saying "One of the best Sonic games since Sonic 3 & Knuckles". IGN rated this the highest, giving it a 9.2 out of 10 saying "The beautiful graphics, great controls, and epic storyline; This is a game that all gamers will remember.". Nintendo Power rated it a 8.5 out of 10 saying "The beautiful graphics and smooth controls makes this a game that can be played over and over." but complained about the game's story.
Sonic Dimensions was nominated for Best Fan Game in the 2013 Sonic Fanon Wiki Spring Awards.

- This is the first game to show Classic Shadow, Classic Blaze, and Classic Silver.
- This is one of the few games where Knuckles is not included in the main story.
- Although Tails is in the main story, Classic Tails is not available to use in Classic Simulator.
- On the US cover of the game, Sonic's gloves are shown to have no ends.
- Unlike other games, each level is called a zone instead of an act.
- Nimbus' design was based on Maria Robotnik.
- Sonic also breaks the fourth wall in this game. Before the fight against Anti-Knuckles, Sonic looks at the screen and says, "He sure reminds you of someone, huh?"
