Espio the Chameleon


Espio the Chameleon is second-in-command of the Chaotix Detective Agency. He makes recurring appearances in BearfootTruck's stories. Unlike Charmy and Vector, he is still old enough to go to high school.

Backstory

Born to unknown parents, Espio was confused about how he came into existence. Wanting to learn more, he journeyed across the continents and even across an ocean, where he ended up in the country of Edon. Along the way, he became a skilled survivalist. One day, he was taken in by Seiichi, an old master living by himself. Under the tutelage of Master Seiichi, he not only learned ninja skills, but also social skills, good manners and the importance of applying oneself. The two were like father and son to each other.

Then, one day, Master Seiichi was killed by some men working for a mysterious warlord named Akuryo. Distraught, Espio vowed to avenge his master and went to war with Akuryo. Despite covertly slaughtering many of Akuryo's goons, he never found The Man, and as a result, Espio became depressed and went back to his old ways of wandering around. Returning to Mobius, he met Charmy Bee, Vector the Crocodile, Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. At first, they didn't get along because of Espio's awkwardness and sometimes abrasive attitude, but they became friends nevertheless. When four of them went to a new amusement park, they got kidnapped, and it was only because of Espio's cunning that he escaped and met up with Knuckles. After this, Espio came to realize the true value of friendship and became a much nicer person.

Sonic Journeys

Continuing his wandering, he encountered Charmy Bee in the wilderness east of the city. Espio sympathized with the young bee's plight, so much so that they became friends despite their differences. When the two met Vector the Crocodile, Espio sympathized with his quest to find answers in life and agreed to found the Chaotix Detective Agency with him, hoping to one day avenge his master.

Sonic War Zone

Born to Monitor the Chameleon and Vigil the Chameleon in the Rainbow Valley section of Angel Island, Espio was given constant education in the ways of the ninja, and when he graduated the chameleon community's Ninja Academy, he was sent to perform missions under the tutelage of Master Shikaze, starting with simple tasks such as obtaining food and attending to pets. Eventually, Espio grew bored with what he deemed "frivolous wastes of time" and went on his own ninja missions.

For what he considered his real first assignment, he stalked an Echidna warlord named Aconcagua the Echidna. Aconcagua was already under surveillance by Master Shikaze for allegedly leading a raid on Rainbow Valley that left a number of fellow ninja. During reconnaissance, Espio was found out and nearly captured. Nevertheless, despite overwhelming odds and Aconcagua's proficient skills as a warrior, Espio killed Aconcagua. Before leaving for the surface world, Espio covertly shipped Aconcagua's diary to Master Shikaze as proof of the former's involvement. Ending up in the Kingdom of Mobius just as the Great War was going poorly, he met with Charmy Bee and Vector the Crocodile, forming the Chaotix as a mercenary group dedicated to taking on the Roseinians on their own terms.

Personality

Espio is cool, calm and collected, making him perhaps the most balanced of all the Chaotix. On the other hand, he used to be a real hothead in his younger years. Despite his calm nature, Espio is not averse to threatening people or using violence. He can also be arrogant at times.

Appearance

Espio's appearance is exactly the same as his canon counterpart.

Abilities

Like most Sonic characters, Espio is packing the obligatory Spin Jump and Spin Dash maneuvers. In addition, he can also do the Homing Attack. However, his most significant ability is the ability to blend in with his surroundings and turn invisible, much like a real chameleon. The only caveats to this are that sudden movements will disrupt his cover and that paint or other liquids will reveal him. In addition to the Spin Dash, Espio can also perform a tornado spin attack. Also, just like a real chameleon, Espio can scale walls and ceilings, and can grab objects with his long tongue. He has very high endurance and can tolerate such degrees of pain that would make the average person pass out. While he is skilled with computers, he is not as skilled as Vector. He is also skilled with various ninja weapons (see below). Lastly, Espio is also a skilled bass and guitar player.

Items & Weapons

Espio carries a variety of ninja weapons, including various types of shurikens and kunai. In BearfootTruck's Univers, he also carries a variety of less-lethal grenades to throw off his opponents, including smoke grenades, flashbang grenades and tear gas grenades. He also has a blowgun, which can be loaded with various types of darts. In Sonic Wave, he receives a Gewehr 43 rifle with a ZF 43 telescopic sight.

Espio is conducting surveillance in Eggopolis when he notices an influx of troops. Upon further investigation, he finds out that Robotnik has been constructing a new megaweapon and that extra troops are being called in to guard it. With his investigation complete, Espio heads back to base.

Sonic's Weird Birthday

Espio – along with Charmy and Vector – worked on a 1970 Chevy Camaro Z/28 for Sonic's birthday. When the Blue Blur insists that he has no need for a car, Espio recalls a time when he drove one in the Drift Championships. Unlike Charmy and Vector, Espio is unfazed by Sonic's crazy driving. It is only due to Espio's idea to construct reinforced chassis and suspension components that Sonic's Camaro survives an insane jump. During the party, Espio knocks out two FCC agents with a blowgun.

A Dark Birthday

Espio surprises Sonic at the Emerald Place Mall and offers to show the birthday gifts that he, Charmy and Vector got for Shadow and Rouge's birthday, which turn out to be cars.

Sonic Wave

Initially, Espio seems to be a loyal member of The Wave. However, when Shadow decides that all opponents of the movement are to be eliminated, Espio goes to Sonic and Tails' house to inform them of the danger they are in, managing to disappear just as a few gang members attempt a drive-by on the house. The next day, when the San Santos PD is conducting a raid on the school, Espio risks his life to evacuate hostages and even informs Sonic, Tails, Rouge and Silver as to Robotnik's location.
