"Here are your chili dogs, Your Highness." The Duke of Velcronia presenting spicy chili dogs to Prince Sonic, with him hungrily wishing that Amy was with them so they can share.

The chili dog is an object that appears in the Sonic Underground television series. It is a popular food product consumed on Mobius, which is made and sold by several parties. It is perhaps best known as the favorite food of Sonic the Hedgehog and his future queen Amy Rose.

Description

Chili dog Underground

A plate of chili dogs.

Chili dog SatAM

A variant of a chili dog with onions and an olive.

As the name suggests, the chili dog is a generic name for a hot dog served in a bun and topped with some sort of meat sauce and a spicy substance known as chili. Often other toppings are also added, such as cheese, onions, paprika powder, and mustard. The style has multiple regional variations in the United States (on Earth), many calling for specific and unique sauce ingredients, types of hot dogs, or types of buns and referred to regionally under region-specific names. Other types of chili dogs also exist. For example, Sonia likes to eat chili dogs with tofu, much to her brother Sonic's disgust. Steve Urkel, meanwhile, likes his with lots of cheese on them. Sonic's alternate dimension counterpart spent most of his time eating them, and not enough time running to burn away all the calories; as a result, he became obese and foul-tempered (except around his wife Amy an his adopted younger brother Tails).

Blast To The Past Part 1 131

A popular chili dog booth that Sonic, his siblings and their uncle visited when he was a child.

Chili dogs are a popular dish served in Mobotropolis. On King Jules' orders, they are injected with vitamins and minerals so his son Sonic (and anyone that wants to eat one, really) can maintain good health while still eating a fast food item. Sonic frequently received them as rewards for his studies by Lord and Lady Windermere, and in particular visited a certain chili dog booth many times when he was a child. While the Queen was pregnant with Sonic and his siblings, she ate a few vitamin-injected chili dogs; even Sonic's first words were "chili dog". He even gets upset when he is denied one. After Dr. Robotnik seized power and transformed Mobotropolis into Robotropolis, the chili dog booths except for the one were closed (though he secretly wanted to try at least one). However, chili dog vending machines remained, which were left forgotten in the city's sewers.

When Sonic reclaimed the throne and rose to power as King of Mobius, all the chili dogs booths were reopened and the chili dog vending machines were reinstalled.

Trivia

  • Sonic the Hedgehog's fondness for chili dogs is something that has been a staple of Sonic's characterization in western territories, having been first established in the animated series Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. In the years since, the chili dog has been established as Sonic's favorite food in just about every Sonic-related media, eventually making its way into the games' canon as well.
  • Noticeably, Sonic is mostly seen tossing chili dogs into his mouth and swallowing them whole, (though there was one instance where he ate most of a chili dog in one bite before eating the last bite a few seconds later). After his etiquette lessons with Lady Windermere, he generally takes a few bites instead and, when seated a table, uses utensils the same way his alternate counterpart did. He also covers his mouth when he burps too.
