Chao Gardens are places where Chao live. Chao can only live in very specific environment conditions.

  • Flow of clean water (or blood?), such as a pool, spring or fountain.
  • Where Chao nut trees grow to provide food.
  • Space for Chao to roam and for eggs, since Chao don't have nesting habits.

Because Chao are popular pets, locations where Chao thrive are usually protected by governments, organisations (Mystic Ruins mountainside Chao garden) or artificial enclosures made as Chao gardens for public use (Station Square's hotel Chao garden).

While Chao are comfortable in most Chao gardens, there are some gardens that are considered "paradise" while some gardens they will considered "infernal".

Chao Village[]

Main article: Ultimate Sonic

Chao Village is a holiday caravan park which is aimed at the interest of Chao lovers. Here you can find Chao-based missions to do and Chao-based goods. It is also where Cream the Rabbit and her mother are staying during the events of the game. As she loves her Chao Cheese so much and the idea of you raising Chao, she will tell you everything you need to know.

Chao Garden[]

Where you can raise Chao. How you raise your Chao will effect its outcome. It's possible to leave the garden with your Chao, in which case it will follow you throughout Chao Village, but cannot leave the village with you.

Hero Chao Garden[]

This garden may not be included in the final production.

The cathedral is actually where the Hero Chao garden is located, however you cannot unlock it without a Hero Chao following you.

Dark Chao Garden[]

This garden may not be included in the final production.

The abandoned subway is actually where the Dark Chao garden is located, however you cannot unlock it without a Dark Chao.

Sonic World[]

Main article: Chao in Sonic World

There are many Chao gardens located throughout the game. There are also Chao gardens that appeal to Good and Bad Chao to help further develop the abilities they can share with their owners. The first and initial Chao garden when you get your first Chao would be Green Hill. These Chao gardens are much larger as it is planned for some online functions and for Chao to play with each other.
