Amy Rose Speedington (later Amy Rose Hedgehog-Celeritas by her marriage to Sonic) is a character in the AngieYaz/RoseOfSharon reboot of the Sonic Underground television series. She is the childhood sweetheart and future queen of Prince Sonic Hedgehog-Celeritas and, later on, the bass guitar player and a lead singer in the Sonic Underground.

Amy Rose's familial origins lie in Hamarapi (aka Mobigypt); her ancestor is Nefershepsut, wife of the great Aman-Rapi. Amy was born into a underclass commoner family to Edmund Howard Speedington and his wife Jocasta "Joyce" Katherine Elizabeth Rosegale-Speedington, and her father (being one of several children) had little money, with him often being reduced to begging for handouts from Farrell just to support his large family. When Dr. Ivo Robotnik took over and began roboticizing anyone that wasn't of the aristocracy, Amy's parents were forced to disguise their home as an estate to save themselves from Robotnik's terror. Upon her birth, Amy was betrothed to Sonic. Four years later, Sonic rescued her from a gang of thugs, and he offered her and her family a chance to stay with him and his uncle Sir Charles Hedgehog's hideout. She and her family accepted. The two grew up together, essentially being raised at court. However, their time together would not last long. When Robotnik became suspicious that a lower-class family was living with the royal Hedgehog Family, Amy and her family were forced to leave and go into hiding to save their lives, much to Sonic's sadness especially. While at court with Sonic, Amy learned to play lute, flute, piano, acoustic guitar and virginals (as well as singing), was competent in prose, poetry, cooking, sewing and needlework, and was taught many Mobian languages, both written and speaking. In addition, she and Sonic (and his siblings Sonia and Manic) also studied grammar, classics, history and Holy Scripture. In regards to music, she later would learn how to play an electric bass guitar that, she soon figured out, could also be a weapon.
Her father is also good friends with Farrell, Tannen Windermere (Lady Anaris Windermere's husband), and the King of Mobius himself, Jules Celeritas. It was through his close friendship with the latter that Edmund betrothed his daughter to Jules' heir, Crown Prince Sonic.
Sonic is often very besotted with Amy, calling her his ‘Thornless Rose’/'Pretty Rose in Bloom' and showering her with gifts and public affection. She caught Sonic’s eye with her vivacious, bubbly but fiery personality as well as her beauty, believing her to be chaste and innocent. Manic and Sonia oftentimes tease Sonic when he mentions Amy. One observer wrote of the relationship: "The Prince had no girlfriend who made him spend so many Mobiums in dresses and jewels as she did, who every day had some fresh caprice." He continues to do so even when the two are crowned King and Queen of Mobius. He even promotes various members of her family to various positions at court; as an example, he promotes Amy's father to being a member of the privy council despite the fact that he [Amy's father] has very little experience. Within months of her arrival at the palace, Sonic bestowed gifts of land and expensive cloth upon Amy. In addition, after his coronation he even embarks on a lavish spending spree to celebrate his marriage, with extensive refurbishments and developments at the Palace of Rhodehall. This will be followed by more expensive gifts for Wintermas at the Royal Hedgehog Palace. Sonic's obsessive but amorous spoiling of her does become irritating to the court at times, especially when he bestows upon her all of his parents' former lands and properties, as well as much of the confiscated wealth of several Robotnik loyalists—even while taking her on progress (heading north) he promises her to take her on a shopping spree for even more dresses and jewels. In one instance, among the properties that he bestows upon his queen is Eggerston Castle, a large castle on the bank of a river near Mobotropolis; he gives it to her as a jointure. He also gives her a jeweled necklace as a much smaller gift. He even gives her a goblet after recovering the existing goblets from the museum in the city of Anay. He also wanted to give her the pendant that Sonia and Manic used to save his life in The Pendant after its power was used up; before then he mused that he would give some of the jewels in the Bogen's treasure chest to her as well. Amy even adopts as her motto Desiderio et Imperium (desire and power). Amy's sigil is a crowned, bicolor Mobian rose; the outer rose is pink and the inner rose is blue. This symbolizes Sonic and Amy's royal union. The rose's stem also has not a single thorn on it. She was lively, pretty, fiery, sweet and kind, and Sonic saw her as perfect and unspoiled, a "thornless rose".
Appearance
Amy is a pink-furred anthropomorphic hedgehog with black eyes and peach skin on her muzzle and arms. She has a small black nose and no back spines. She also has two medium-length eyelashes on each side of her eyes. Additionally, her five short head quills point downwards, somewhat resembling a bob cut. She also has three spikes for bangs on her head, and a short tail.
For attire, Amy wears a red, sleeveless, backless dress with white trim, tall red boots with a white stripe down the center and white cuffs, a red hairband, and white wrist-length gloves with gold bracelets for cuffs. This is her first casual outfit before she marries Sonic. As Queen of Mobius, however, she wears a gold crown made from the same material as Rings - Mobian gold. While her armor covering her body is white, the jewel on the middle of it is blue. She wears a white armored dress with a gold heart-shaped decoration on the skirt and a long purple cape with a heart-shaped pendant on the front. Other than this outfit, she also wears Tudor-style gowns and some casual clothing.
When she was younger, Amy's five head quills were longer and pointed backwards, and she had a single back spine. Her eyes were and still are black and she wore an orange ruffled or pleated skirt, a green shirt with puffed sleeves and a white collar, white and blue sneakers with orange shoelaces, white wrist-length gloves, and a red ribbon headband.
Powers and abilities
Physical abilities
While not superhuman, Amy possesses above-average physical attributes, making her a powerful figure in her own right. She has high physical strength, wielding her apparently heavy Piko Piko Hammers with little effort and swings them around with enough force to smash clean through metal, send enemies skyrocketing, fly around like a helicopter rotor, create whirlwinds, generate shock waves or send herself flying by hammering into the ground. On top of that, Amy could slap Knuckles with enough force to send him flying into a tree without even trying.
Amy is an expert tracker, capable of locating the whereabouts of others. It is she who, with even the Pendant and Orb as a guide, helps to finally locate Queen Aleena and King Jules, much to the royal triplets' elation.
Amy is capable of running at super speeds, which stems from her practice of chasing after Sonic and her innate hedgehog abilities. While her exact top speed is unclear, she can run fast enough to even keep Sonic on a constant lookout for her, suggesting she is a remarkably fast runner. Amy can even run fast enough to create afterimages of herself. However, Amy has admitted herself that she is not as fast as Sonic, even outright telling him "Wait up, Sonic! Not fair! I can't run as fast as you!".
Like Sonia, Amy has as well good acrobatic skills and agility, being able to handle and swing her large Piko Piko Hammer gracefully and without disturbing her when airborne, perform various forms of movements and tricks when launched into midair, and grind on rails with ease. Amy also possesses a very high degree of physical endurance and durability. Said to be stronger than most people give her credit for, Amy is a tough fighter, though her combat skills are not as developed as those of Sonic, Knuckles, Sonia, Manic, or Tails. Combined with her aggressiveness though, Amy can be a fierce opponent in a confrontation. While the martial arts she has trained under are more reminiscing of graceful dancing, Amy knows how to defend herself against, and can go up against powerful SWATbots and highly trained combatants.
Personality
Amy's personality has been been described as fiery but sweet. Vivacious, beautiful, and clever (according to contemporary accounts), Sonic was charmed by her when they were young children. Although Amy maintains her feelings for Sonic from the video games, she has learned more self-control over her demeanor towards him and is now more caring and level-headed.
Trivia
- When creating Amy's characterization for the reboot of Sonic Underground (as she did not appear in the original animated series), it was decided that she would have the fiery personality of Mary, Queen of Scots (wife and consort of Francis I of France), along with the beauty and vivacity of Anne Boleyn and her cousin Katherine Howard, two of the six queens of King Henry VIII.
- However, her former status as a commoner before becoming Queen of Mobius (as well as her relationship with Sonic), is derived from that of Elizabeth Woodville, consort of Edward IV of England. Her joint rule of Mobius with Sonic also makes her similar to Mary II of England.
- Sonic Underground (the original TV series) began development sometime in the early 1990s, with the video game Sonic the Hedgehog CD (Amy's first appearance) being released in 1993, two years later.
- If Michelle Thomas (actress for the Myra Monkhouse character from the TV series Family Matters) was still alive, she would have been cast as the voice actress for Amy Rose (and her Mobigyptian ancestor Nefershepsut). This would have reunited her with Jaleel White, the voice actor for Crown Prince Sonic, Prince Manic, Princess Sonia, King Jules Celeritas, and Aman-Rapi.
- Along with the many gifts of land, jewels and expensive cloth that he frequently gives to Amy, Sonic also gives Amy chili dogs as gifts, usually wrapped in pretty foil wrappers, so she can have a little "extra energy".
- Sonic's affectionate nickname for Amy, his "thornless rose", is a reference to the alleged nickname that Henry VIII called Katherine Howard—his "Rose Without a Thorn". [1]
